TICKET ARCHIVE -> How Do I Reinstall Osx

Hi,
My DVD writer will no longer write DVDs though can still read media. Before deciding the laser is damaged, I thought I'd try reinstalling the system to see if that improved things.

I am currently running Panther. Do I need to reinstall OSX then upgrade or can I reinstall from the Panther upgrade disks?

All help welcome

Kate,

Before you reinstall, try using Disk utility to repair any problems.

Start up the computer using the OS X (10.3) CD Disk 1. (Insert CD, Restart computer, immediately hold down the C key).

When the Installer Screen comes up, release the C key, do not click on the Installer screen. Instead go to the Installer Menu and select Disk Utility.

When that opens, click once on the second icon at the far left, then click on Repair Disk at the bottom far right.

Watch the Activity Screen. If it shows that any repairs have been done, hit the Repair Disk button again. You want to see Appears Okay with out any reference to repairs done. You may need to hit that button three or four times.

Once that is done, quit Disk Utility, restart the computer, and try to burn a DVD.

Do you get any errors when you try to burn? What media are you using for the blank DVDs? Is your burner an external or is it the Super Drive?

Thanks for your reply - I'll try this.
As for errors when I burn Dvds, I've listed them in my previous thread (I think it's called "can't burn dvds" - is as though my Mac no longer understands what a blank dvd is and is unable to relate to it in any way.
Cheers

Kate,

Let me know if repairing the disk corrects the problem.

As for your previous post, I did a search and can not find it. Did you post it in the forums, or our Free Tech Support? It could be you posted it in our tech support before the upgrade of our system. If this is the case, I will not be able to check those postings.

Can you please give me an example of what the error says?

Hi
I did the disk utility thing you suggested (and learnt something new into the bargain, thanks) but it hasn't solved the problem.

When I try to burn data using Toast 6 Titanium I get this error
Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
Sense code 0x73 0x03

When I tried to burn a DVD from the Finder I got "problem with disk drive" error 0x80020023

It's not an extrenal drive, but the one that cam inside the G5 - a sony something or other...I've tried different makes of dvd - same error with all, but the drive reads cds and dvds ok....

Kate,

What kind of blank DVD's do you have? I have been researching the problem and have come up with the fact that some Apple SuperDrives (like yours) does not see the DVD-RWs. And most of them do not recognize the DVD+R at all.

Do you have the latest Toast with the update to 6.09? You can get that update here: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6351

Do you have the OS updated to 10.3.8?

Hi
I have toast 6.0 - but lacking the latest update doesn't explain why I can't burn disks from the finder.
my partner managed to burn a dvd-rw but when I tried it I got error messages. I've tried Sony dvd+r, Maxell dvd+r and cheapie Bulkpaq dvd+r - no luck with any.
I'm currently trying to create a disk image with disk utility and seeing if I can burn a dvd from that but I haven't got the hang of it yet and it seems very long winded because I have to start up from the panther upgrade disk before I can create a disk image, otherwise I get a device busy message...
I really think I need to reinstall the system - I've not done it since upgrading to 10.3.8 and I seem to have a second Library inside one of my document folders - lord knows where it came from...
All I wanted to do was back up some data and I really want to sort this problem out myself before my partner gets home and takes over the mac for the weekend to try and fix it himself!!!
Thanks for your input...

Kate,

You do not need to reinstall the system. Try using a DVD-R. TDK makes good ones. And use the lowest speed you can... 4x I think is the lowest. Super Drive can not handle the DVD+ of any brand.

You should have three Library folders. One in System. One sitting by itself, and the other in your Home folder.

Could it be that the one in Documents really belongs in Home? If you do not have a Library folder in your Home folder, move the one out of documents and let it sit in your Home.
