i have an imac g5 running mac os v 10.3.9
it is essential that i can burn dvd's but the machine does not have a x8 superdrive.
what is the easiest way to allow the burning of dvd's - external hardrive - software update etc?
Hi and welcome to macosx.com
(1) with only a combo (so CD-R burner, but DVD-R player), there i no possibility to transform it to a DVD-R burner through software update: burning lens are not the same on a DVD burner than on a CD-R one
(2) updating your COMBO to superdrive can be done through Apple services, but this is very expensive compared to buying an external drive
(3) I would bought a FIREWIRE (or FW+USB) double layer external burner; for instance among the LaCie line of products

Do not focus you choice on LighScribe system which allows you to write a cover onto the non-burnded DVD surface: sucg DVD-R are more expensive than others
Expect around 150$ - 200$ for FW, 100$ for USB ones
Most of the time -but you need to be allowed to test it- burners bought in a PC retailer work and are less exepnsive
Iomega/LaCie/QueDrive are mac compatible but 10/20 % more expensive then nonma PC brands.
