once you've converted an avi file to a dvd file how do you burn it ont a dvd-r?

You need at least Toast V6, select DVD-ROM (UDF) under advanced data, create a new disk, add VIDEOTS and AUDIOTS folder and burn.

This should play in most DVD players

In Toast 7 the avi to DVD conversion is built in.

I have ffmpegX. Is that the same thing? I don't know what to do with this program though? What do I convert this avi file to? dvdmpeg2 or avi to mov? Not sure still need help.

ffmpegX will help you to convert the files but not burn them to an industry standard format that DVD players can read.

Toast V7 will do the conversion and burning in the correct format in one smooth interface.

Even if you use ffmpegX to convert the files you will still need Toast to generate the disk.
