i cannot figure out how to do this. importing to itunes or finder is not enough; i need a one to one copy using a disk image or something along those lines. i can't figure out how to do it in disk utility. the "new image from (device)" option is dimmed out even though i have a valid audio cd in the drive.

everyone says that disk copy's functions have been assimilated into disk utility, but i think i need some step-by-step guidance.

thanks.

10.3 ibook with one cd drive, by the way.

Thanks Peter.

Unfortunately that link only tells you how to burn a disk image once you already have it. My problem is that I can't figure out how to create a disk image from an audio CD. As I said, when I insert an audio cd, "New image from (device)" is dimmed out.

sorry I misread your query. Anyways have you tried the usual suspects like repairing disk permissions, creating a new admin account to test system integrity, etc..?
Meanwhile I'll reopen this thread for other techs to have ago at it.

I think that the reason the audio cd is dimmed out is probably due to some sort of copyright protection embedded onto the audio cd. The audio cd is probably a read-only disc.

Are you able to access your music on the audio cd? If yes, then copy all of this music into a folder on Desktop or something. Then drag this folder into the iTunes window. iTunes will automatically import the music from the folder. You can then use iTunes's built-in burning feature to burn an audio disc.

When in doubt, always consult 'Help'. "Command+Shift+/"

The CD is definitely not copy protected; it is by a small local band, and I can rip it on my Windows computer with no problem. All audio CDs are read only once the session is closed.

I am looking for a way to duplicate the CD on a Mac, leaving the TOC perfectly intact, so that I can rip it securely later using EAC on Windows. Dragging the AIFF files off the CD in the Finder does not accomplish this, because that means you're performing extraction insecurely. I want to duplicate, not extract. Is there no way to do this?

Well, yes, there is. Toast Titanium 7.

You can make copies of a CD or DVD and the information it contains. To do so, use Disk Utility to create a copy or "disk image" of the disc, and then burn that image onto other discs .

For more information, open Disk Utility (in Applications/Utilities), choose Help > Disk Utility Help, and search for "duplicating a CD or DVD."

As I said, "New image from (Device)" is greyed out when I put in a CD and select that drive. Permissions were repaired just a moment ago and the problem persists. Searching Disk Utility Help for "duplicate" or "duplicating" brings up seven topics, none of which are relevant to copying a CD.

I know Toast is an option, but there has to be a way to do it natively. I can't believe Apple would leave this functionality out of OSX and require a third party program for a basic task like copying a CD.

No, Apple has included this functionality in the OS. It seems that the particular CD you are using is not recognisable by the OS.

Try using some other random CD and see if Disk Utility allows you to create an image from that. If it does, then the problem is with your originial audio cd. If it doesn't, then there is either a hardware or software problem.

The CD is recognized because it will play and I can copy the AIFF files. It's only when I try to use the Disk Utility "create image" function that it doesn't appear.

I have tried this with several different audio CDs and the result is always the same.

So I guess we're down to it being "a hardware or software problem." So now, how do I go about diagnosing things further, getting more specific, and finally solving the problem?

Is this a hardware problem?
-----------------------
Take one of these audio discs and insert them into another Mac and see if Disk Utility still has "New Image" greyed out. If it does, then the problem is with your audio discs. If it doesn't then there's a problem with either your Mac or your OS.

Is this a software problem?
-----------------------
This could easily be resolved by using Toast to burn the disc. However, Toast costs money.

Is this an audio cd problem?
------------------------
Insert a data cd into your mac and see if "New Image" is still greyed out in Disk Utility. If it is, then it seems that you have either a "hardware or software" problem. If it isn't greyed out, then the problem is with the audio cd.

Extract from Disk Utility Help
-------------------------

You can use Disk Utility to quickly make copies of a CD or DVD and the information it contains.

To do so, first you create a disk image of the CD or DVD. Then you use the disk image to burn copies of the disc.

Insert the CD or DVD disc in your computer's optical drive and select it in the list of disks and volumes.
Choose File > New > "Disk Image from (name of disc)."
Type a name for the disk image
Choose "compressed," read/write," or "DVD/CD master" from the Image Format pop-up menu.
If you want to create a disc you can use to start up your computer, choose "DVD/CD master." Otherwise, choose "compressed" to create a smaller disk image, and choose "read/write" to create a disk image that's quicker to create and open.

Click Save.
When creating the disk image finishes, eject the original CD or DVD.
Select the disk image in the list and choose Images > Burn,
When the Burn Disc dialog appears, insert a blank CD or DVD, and click Burn.

You can continue using the disk image to create as many duplicate discs as you need.

--------------------

Good luck!
