TICKET ARCHIVE -> How to Export Os9 Comments to Os X

I have for years been an avid user of the Comments field as an aid to searching for files and, particularly, photos.

Now I find that OS X uses a different method for storing Comments and that none of my old comments survive the transfer to my new Mac Mini running OS 10.4 (Tiger)

Is there some way that I can convert the old comments so that they will display in OS X?

Thanks,.......Bill

Thanks for writing in to macosx for help. My name is Khama and I'll assist you in getting this figured out.

I havent used the program I am about to link you, so I cannot vouch for it. That being said, I was able to locate the following program:

Comment Converter
http://www.skytag.com/commentconverter/index.html

It says 10.2 so I do not know if it will work under Tiger, but worth a look.

FYI - I found the program using the following site:
www.versiontracker.com
and "comments" as a search criteria

VersionTracker is a great resource for finding Macintosh software.

I hope this helps. Please respond and let me know how it goes.

Thanks Khama,
I tried your suggestion but thus far have not gotten it to decompress. Part of the problem is that I'm new to OSX and am not yet really comfortable with it.

It was my impression that Safari (Tiger version) is versatile enough to decode .sit files without the need to install Stuffit Expander. The Comment Converter program was listed on the Skytag site as being a 73K .hqx download. It arrived on my desktop with a .sit extension and a note saying that Safari didn't know how to decode it. When I double-clicked on it, it opened into TextEdit and displayed as garbage.

I also tried downloading the program onto my trusty Book laptop running OS9 (with Stuffit Expander installed) and also could not see anything but garbage.

Am I doing something stupid?

If you reply with links, please address it to :
wee4@mac.com
not to the Compuserve address, which is also giving trouble.

Bll.......

Dear Bill,

If you are getting this in your email, I can not change what address it goes to. I am only replying to you at the MacOSX.com site. If a copy is being sent via email, then thats in your settings.

I am running 10.3.9 on my machine. I was able to click the download link and retrieved the file. It unstuffed using Stuffit Expander on my machine.

As far as 10.4 not needing Stuffit, I cannot comment on that. I myself am not running 10.4 yet.

As far as it running on your OS 9 - it is a OS X app, not OS 9.

Lets try the following:

1) Download Stuffit and install
http://www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html

2) Attempt new download of Comment Converter
http://www.skytag.com/commentconverter/index.html

Try that with a download of stuffit, and see how it goes.

The program is freeware, so if that doesnt work for you, I'll see about hosting a FTP of it unstuffed so you can download that instead.

Dear Kharma

Well, either my age (84) or my incompence is showing.
I downloaded Stuffit (45 minutes via dial-up) and it appeared on my desktop as Stuffit Standard.exe. When I double-clicked on it I got the same pop-up as before--something like "There is no default application to open the selected file, please choose one" Then it displayed a list of Applications in my machine with (I believe) several of them highlighted. The only one that seemed at all applicable was TextEdit and perhaps foolishly--since that was the same choice I had made before when trying to open CommentConverter.sit--I selected that again. The file opened as garbage into the TextEdit window. Thereafter, whenever I double-clicked on the Stuffit Standard.exe file on the desktop, it opened directly as Garbage into a TextEdit window, without i=giving me any other other choice.

Now, since I no longer have any highlights to narrow down my choices, I have no idea which of the long list of Applicaations to try to use to open the file.

If you can help me here, perhaps that is all I need to know, since the old download of CommentConverter.sit is still on my desktop.

Have I mademy prediciment clear?

Thanks......Bill

That information actually helps me to understand the core of the issue much better. The Stuffit.exe you downloaded is the wrong file. Unfortunately .exe files are executable code for PC's not Macs. ( For the most part ) Also, you accidentally have gotten your Mac into a default application use loop, and selected the wrong application to be default for that file type. The age isnt an issue, just means you have more experience is all ;-)

Lets try this,

Click the following link and download Stuffit 9.0.2 for Mac
http://www.allume.com/downloads/files/StuffItSTD902.dmg

It will mount a disk image on your desktop. Open that disk image, and you should see an icon to click and install. ( Example of what you should see in the following link: http://www.eqmac.com/images/Install.jpg )

Once installed, then go back to the CommentConverter.sit and click it, while holding your "Control" key down. You should a menu. One of the menu choices should be "Other..." ( Example of what you should see in the following link: http://www.eqmac.com/images/Other.jpg )

Thats the one to choose. Other.

Then you will get a file navigation window. Its waiting for you to tell it what application it should use. Navigate to the Stuffit folder. If you used the default settings, you going to want to navigate to the applications/Stuffit Standard 9.0/Stuffit Expander file and point to that. Then click the "Always Open With" check box and then click the open folder. ( Example of what you should see in the following link: http://www.eqmac.com/images/Choose.jpg )

Now take these directions with a grain of salt. Your computing experience may differ slightly as you are on 10.4 and I am 10.3.9, but they should give you a general overview of what you need to look for and change.

I hope this information is what you need to correct the issue. Please reply and let me know how it goes.

Many, many thanks, Khama, or Laurence M. as the case may be--your messages arrive here with either or both of those names:
Following your clear and detailed instructions I had no trouble downloading and installing Stuffit Expander.
How did you get to be so smart? Your response was in stark contrast to the many hours I spent on the phone (and waiting on the phone) Thursday and Friday with the knuckleheads at Allume. As I think I reported earlier, when I first went to the Stuffit site there was a big red button labled "Download Stuffit Expander". Hitting it, however, took me down a long path filled with sales pitches for their gigantic "Pro" versions, but no way to the simple Stuffit Expander. When I finally got someone at Allume to walk me through the process, he got the same result and concluded that the free version was no longer available. He then proceeded to sell me a registration number for my already-downloaded StuffitStandard9.exe which of course didn't work. By then the tech support group had closed up shop for the week-end and I was left hanging.

Unfortunately I still have not been able to get the Unstuffed CommentConverter to convert comments. I'll work with it a little more and try contacting the author before I bother you more with that one.

Communication with macosx.com has been slowed somewhat by my request to change my email address. That I did when I found out how heavily macosx's relied on long hyperlinks that my old Classic Compuserve account just couldn't handle. So I asked to switch to my new address at wee4@mac.com and thus far that has been only partially successful. Notices of your messages continue to arrive via Compuserve. In the process, I seem to have ended up with two usernames--So if you hear from billyboy instead of Uncle_Bill that's still me.

You have been so helpful that I am wondering if there is any way that I can direct future questions to you or does macosx.com parcl them out as they see fit?

Thanks again....Uncle_Bill/billyboy

Dear Uncle Bill,

I am glad I was able to help you out with Stuffit Expander. Feel free to use either Khama or Laurence M. Khama is my user name here, and as a volunteer our real names are also required.

I've been an IT Director in a company that was 90% Mac with over 30 clients for the last 8 years. Currently I am the Macintosh Specialist, for a IT consulting firm. I dont propose to know everything, in fact far from it, as I myself use the site for information. But I do have an extensive knowledge and love to help others.

BTW when looking for software, try using the site I mentioned before,
- http://www.versiontracker.com
In the search box you can place either the name of the software you are looking for, or a keyword about the type of software you need. ( IE. email client, comment converter, or whatever comes to mind )
When you see a list of software on Version Tracker, a good idea is to click the name and view the user comments. ( Sometimes it will truncate them, you can click the link to "View All Feedback" and see them all if that happens. ) If you just want to straight download the file, try clicking on the list again, but this time click on the File Size column instead of the software name column. That link will take you directly to the download.

* Side tip - Try going into your Safari preferences, and turn on all the check boxes in the "Tabs" options. This will make surfing the internet much easier. Then when you see a link you want to visit, but dont want to loose your original page, just hold down the "apple" key when you click it, and it will open in a new tab. This way you dont have 1000 windows open ( Just the one browser window ) and dont loose your original starting spot. The "Tabs" appear just below your bookmarks.

As far as the Comment Converter not working yet, unfortunately I have not used that particular program, and the softwares developer site says 10.2 and later. It may not be Tiger compatible. Though I may some some more good news.

Take a look at the following links:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13104
http://preciousgem.webhop.net/

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23400 - This one you might have to email the author and ask for a release that will work past 12/31/04

Unfortunately using MacOSX.com there is no way to direct a question to me. ( At least none that I am aware of. All questions end up in a pool and the volunteers pick from that pool the questions that we can answer. ) I encourage you to use MacOSX.com for your Macintosh support needs, but if you have some questions you want to direct to me, you can always visit me at my site http://www.EQMac.com or email me at Khama@eqmac.com

BTW one thing you could do for me, is leave me feedback on this thread when we are done. Let the powers that be here at MacOSX know if I was helpful to you and if so how much. Thanks.

Thanks very much Kharma for all your help. Thanks to your propt and clear instructions I think I have the "Comments? problem solved. After a crash and subsequent rebooting of my computer the CommentConverter application stated working. Also I have received some prompt and helpful inormation from the program's author.
I think that we can consider this thread closed and I hope that our paths will cross again in the future.
