I have recently started using OS 9.2 on a G4 PowerMac. Whilst browsing, a number of web pages have informed me that I do not have the correct version of Windows Media to play a file.

I have been directed to the the Windows Media download page, and have downloaded Media Player 9 for OSX.

However, when I then try to open the download, I am informed that a suitable application has not been selected to carry this out.

I do not know which application is suitable for this procedure. Can you let me know how to do it.

Hi Gideon,

Ok... let's see if I can help you out. First, Mac OS 9.2 is the Classic environment and and older Mac operating system. Windows Media Player version 9 is only supported by Mac OS X which is Tiger, 10.4.x. I know all these different operating system numbers and versions can seem a bit confusing. Bottom line, unless your G4 PowerMac is running Tiger, you won't be able to use Windows Media Player vesion 9. And that is the version that most web sites require now.

Bottom line, you need to upgrade to Tiger if you want to run Windows Medial Player version 9. Click this link. It will take you to a page in the Apple web site that can give you information as to the system requirements to run Tiger.

Thanks for choosing Macosx.com. If you need further assistance, please don't hesisitate to post back.

Regards,
Carolyn :-)

Hi Carolyn

Oops, sorry for the delay in this response, your reply and subsequent emails found their way into my junk mail box.

Your info has been helpful. Of course it would have helped if I had read and corrected my question before submitting it. I have recently started using 10.2, not 9.2 and I also use 9.1 for some applications.

The Windows Media website does not specify that Media 9 only runs on 10.4, it just says OS X and I guess that is the source of the confusion. However, which version of Windows Media can one use with OS 10.2? If any.....

Hi Gideon

WMP version 9.0 will work on 10.2.

The application it's looking for to open is Stuffit Expander. The downloaded file is compressed and has to be decompressed using Expander. You can download that here;

http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/download.html

Once you have that, drop the WMP file on the Stuffit Expander icon.
