I have an mp4 track and want to split and record the audio file so that I can use it for a slide show. Audio is not copyrighted - how do I do this? each time I try and record using audacity my quicktime gets muted.

Sorry you're having a problem. Are you using iTunes to play the file? You say it's not copyrighted so I'm assuming that you didn't purchase it from iTunes. If someone sent the file to you, it's possible that it might be a file they purchased from iTunes store.
At any rate, there is one way to get the sound, however, this is assuming that you can play the file in SOME program. I'm not all that knowledgeable concerning Audacity. But I have played many many mp4 files in iTunes. If it plays in iTunes, but you can't copy the file, then you can use a shareware program called Audio Hijack Pro. That program will allow you to record the sound from ANY program you have and save it as an mp3 or some other format.
Let me know if you can play the file from iTunes and we'll go from there.
