I'm looking at Activity Monitor and its showing me some stuff running that I never use like the Dock. I've never understood the point of the Dock when Command+Tab is so much faster. Is there a point or is it for beginners to make things easier?

(These look like OS X programs)
SystemUIServer
System Events
Dock
loginwindow
ATSServer

(iTunes, Microsoft, DiscWarrior could all be swept couldn't they?
What about the others?)
iTunes Helper
MicrosoftMouseHelper
mdimport
pbs
aped
DiskWarriorDaemo

To put it bluntly: don't ever mess with the programs in the first category. They are essential for your system. And several of the programs you've specified in the second category are hands off too.

Eg, if you kill the loginwindow, you'll be forcefully logged out loosing your entire session. And mdimport is part of Spotlight. And if I'm not mistaken, you get the [cmd][tab] as well as the abilty to drag-n-drop stuff to/from the desktop from Dock.

I use Spotlight and I understand that some of them are essential running programs. What about these that probably aren't?

DiskWarriorDaemo
MicrosoftMouseHelper
iTunes Helper

And is there any way of getting rid of the Dock? I've never seen such a pointless program. Command+Tab is so much faster and more fluid. I don't usually have more than a few programs running at once as it slows the system down too much. I'm using a 1.25 Mini with 1 gb ram so that's part of the problem. The other problem is Apple makes one believe that you can run a huge amount of programs with no "price" paid in system resources. Total hogwash....

As I stated before: Killing the Dock - while possible - will loose your ablitity to use your preferred [cmd][tab] program switching as well as Exposé

DiskWarriorDaemon:
DiskWarriorDaemon monitors your drives at specified intervals. You must have run DiskWarrior at some time and set it up to monitor your hardware status.

OK - I can't get rid of the Dock. No biggee....
I looked at my Disk Warrior program and I can't find any option for it to monitor anything at all. Any idea where to look?

The Microsoft Mouse Helper I just realized is to run my Intellipoint software. I forgot that it has to run to reprogram my mouse buttons. Understood that it is essential.

Can I get away with deleting iTunes all together? VLC is so much better for my uses.

DiskWarrior:
Click on 'Hardware' and select the 'Automatic Diagnostics' tab.

iTunes:
It's possible to completely delete iTunes if you so want, but I don't recommend it as Apple's software updates expect to find it in /Applications. You'll just get into problems later on. On the other hand, you can remove the helper from your login items without that much loss of function. But if you start iTunes again, it'll re-appear.

OK - thanks for the clarification. Some things aren't worth sweating about.

Regarding Disk Warrior - when I want to rebuild a partition on the slave hard drive it tells me it cannot be rebuilt. "The original directory is too severely damaged."

The drive and partitions seem to be in perfect working order.

If you are having issues with DiskWarrior please open another ticket as this isn't covered by the current problem description ; and I don't know that much about DW-issues. I'm closing this ticket now as all of your original issues have been dealt with.
