Hi there
bought another (have one already) HP laserjet2100 with 600N network card exactly the same as an old one I had which works fine when connected to tiger macbook pro intel and old G4 with 9.2.2
However when put new printer into ethernet network at first could not see printer but this was sorted using HP Direct and assigning IP adress on Intel mac.
Howver when I print I get code on first page followed by masses of blank pages.
To solve this I downloaded ghost and gimp printers and managed to get it to print. However quality is really poor when compared to old printes fonts are jagged etc. Any ideas to get it up to speed with exactly same machine?
Plus os 9.2 machines cannot see printer at all. All help appreciated

If you still have this problem -
Concerning print quality, have you looked in the Copies & Pages menu of the Print Dialog to see if there are settings available?
You could try the HP Laserjet 6 Series Gimp-Print driver as an alternate for troubleshooting.
For OS 9 to see the new printer, you may need to turn on appletalk in the printer/jetdirect card. You can do this in OS X by the Terminal command
telnet [IP_address]
There are help commands to show you what to change.
Also from OS X, you can test what appletalk devices are working by typing this command in the Terminal:
atlookup

"Ethertalk" on the JetDirect is enabled - that's appletalk over ethernet.
Appletalk has to be turned On for the network interface you are using -- so if you're using Wireless, for example, you have to turn on appletalk in the Airport area in Network Prefs. If you then change to ethernet, you have to go in and turn on appletalk there. (appletalk can only be on for one interface at a time)
Forgot to ask - any chance the first 2100 is 2100M? That means for Mac, with postscript built-in.

Hi there, thanks for that sorry I'm lost... on 9.2.2 mac - with which I'm trying to connect to printer (as opposed to MacBook Pro which connects/prints fine) - the machine has appletalk on (with ethernet selected) whatever I do even using laserjet print utility I can't get it to see the laserjet2100 (by the way its not a 2100m)...interstingly in the configuration page form teh 2100 i noticed it says "appletalk name HP color laserjet4500 Etalk zone *" is this a problem?

As far as I know (looked this up on the web), the 2100 model is a PCL, not a postscript, printer. HP doesn't make drivers for OS 9 for the PCL models, only for postscript models.
Quote from HP:
Many of the HP LaserJet printers either have PostScript (R) onboard or as an option. HP includes Macintosh PostScript drivers with these printers. Some LaserJet printers do not have the PostScript language available. HP does not provide a Macintosh printing solution for non-PostScript LaserJet printers.
Have you gotten OS X to print using the HP Laserjet 6 Series driver? It's for non-postscript Laserjets.
The printer name in the jetdirect may mean it was used for a Color Laserjet before.

I think it says postscript version when you print a test page (I have a single button on my old Laserjet that prints a test page if held for 5 secs). No -- I just tried it and there's a small postscript Icon near the bottom of the page, not the version number.

hi there both print outs say "fast postscript emulation" and seem to have same print outs when you hld down green button for 5 secs...are we lost?

No that sounds like they both have the postscript option - which is good.
Let's review what your network setup is - please go to network prefs (OS X) and TCP/IP prefs (OS 9) and tell me the IP addresses of all computers. Then do the Jetdirect card test printouts and tell me the IP addresses of the printers.
You know, you don't have to rely on appletalk - you can print using IP printing - once we get the network connections sorted out.

hi there printers' ip addresses are:
192.168.254.100
192.168.254.70
compters are
192.168.254.1
192.168.254.7
192.168.254.3

That all looks perfect.
On the OS 9 computer(s) one last reminder to check the Appletalk Control Panel set to ethernet. And try finding the printer in Chooser. Otherwise --
On an OS 9 computer, start the Apple utility "Desktop Printer Utility." I think its original install location is the Apple Extras folder.
Create a new desktop printer. Enter the problem printer's IP address. Select the PPD. Use "raw" for queue name. (I don't have your model jetdirect card, but I think "bin" and "ps" are also allowed queue names.) Finish and try it.

hi there did that and tried printing but just hangs and then times out then says can't find printer...in desktop tility on dialogue that allowed me to enter ip address was teh "LPD' one was this correct?
