I print with an HP 6MP LaserJet on an iMac G5 running 10.4.11. It is connected using a Belkin USB to Parallel cable. It works fine. HOWEVER, I cannot get the LaserJet 6MP Utility to work. It sees the 6MP printer, but when I click on Settings in the Utility window, two printer lights light up for a while, then go back to one light (standby) and the beach ball just spins forever until I force quit the utility. The only reason I want the utility to work is to chand/change the printer settings (print density, resolution, etc). Any ideas? Of course, the utility is running in Classic mode (9.2.2). The printer works fine with Class and OS X applications. It's just the Utility that doesn't work.
If the HP LaserJet utility is using Classic, then you may find that it can't do too much without the printer drivers. Tiger changed the way the printers work with Classic. The Classic/OS 9 drivers are not used at all. For example, you don't need to set the printer in the Choose from Classic. Printing uses the OS X drivers, if they exist. It's possible that old LJ utility can't work from Classic when you are running Tiger, because it can't access the drivers now.
Do you have the most up-to-date software from the HP web site?

Can you change those printer settings from the drop-down in the print dialog box? I have a LaserJet 2100, more or less the next newer generation from that 6MP. and I have those same type of settings available whenever I print.
Hope this helps you...

I am using the latest HP software. I think you're right about using it in Classic. The settings I wanted to access are not shown in the 6MP drop-down menus. But since the printer is working okay, I guess I'll just have to assume the settings are satisfactory. I used to set the print density to its lowest while still producing good results, as this seemed to extend toner life. Thanks for the answer!
