Description:
Gentlemen:
I have an HP 550C DeskWriter printer which ran on my old computor (Performa 575) but I now have a new iMac. I have three questions: 1. Can I buy an interface cable that goes from the USB port on the iMac to the 8 pin on the HP? 2. Will the printer software that came with the HP work in the iMac? 3. What ways are available to transfer data from the old computor to the new and put floppy data into the iMac?
I seem to be getting the "run-around" from the dealer where the iMac was purchased.
Thanks much
Walter

Dear grandpawj,

1. USB adapters have recently been released. They will allow you to connect non-USB devices to your computer. Here is one example:

*Momentum's uConnect for printers ($99) (425) 893-8100, www.momentuminc.net

I cannot verify if this will actually work. You should check with the company and HP.

Be aware that HP is selling USB printers for the iMac: the Deskjet 670c and the Deskjet 690c. They are relatively inexpensive, superior to the HP 550c, and easier to configure with the iMac.

2. They are a number of ways to transfer data to your iMac:

*Email your user files as attachments to yourself. Use the iMac to download them. Note: this is not suitable for very large files.

*Plug a standard phone cable into the iMac modem and the other end into the RJ-ll jack of the older Mac's modem. On both computers, open the Modem control panel, choose the appropiate modems and select ignore dial tone. (Note: to do this, you need OT/PPP installed on the older Mac.) Compress your files with Stuffit before transferring. Launch Appleworks and create a Communications document. Choose Connection from Settings menu. Choose Serial Tool from the menu. Under Port Settings, set baud rate to match speed of both modems (i.e. 57,600 for 28bps) Also use Parity None, Data Bits 8, Stop bits 1, Handshake DTR&CTS. Choose File Transfer. Use Protocol Xmodem tool, Method is MacBinary, Transfer Options is Standard. Choose Connection. On one computer type ATD and hit Return. On other computer type ATA and hit Return. Choose Send file from session menu. Select file you want to send. On iMac computer, choose Receive from Session menu.
