Hi,

I have a PB Rev B 1.0 Ghz PB, which currently has Panther 10.3.0 installed. I never upgraded to 10.3.x since people were experienceing the fan issue. Anyways.

Well, I bought a new PB 1.5 Ghz, and I got this Tiger DVD (restore DVD) with it. I was using that to install Tiger on my older PB, and I got the installer log which I have included below. The installer checks whether the software (Tiger) can be installed on the PB or not, and it comes back to me with an alert saying that it cannot install Tiger on the PB.

I thought that since I had 10.3.0 installed on my PB, I am having these problems. I went ahead and upgraded that to 10.3.9 this last weekend. And i tried upgrading that to Tiger, and it still gives me the same message when i try to install Tiger. I am at my wit's end now!!

Thanks,
Kamran.

Hi Kamran

Apple ships disks that are machine specific, so the disk that came with the new PowerBook won't install on the older machine.

So, do I need a new fresh copy of Tiger from the store in order to install Tiger on my older PB?

That is a good way for Apple to make money ...

Yes you do need a retail version of Tiger to install on the older machine.

This isn'y a way for Apple to take money from you, it's just that they include the system disks in the price of the machine being sold.

And it's illegal to install the same disk on more than one machine with only having one license. This is true for PC systems as well, not that we all follow that.

Thank you Bob for your prompt replies. I really appreciate it.

I will try to get a retail version of Tiger then. I am quite surprised though that Apple is making OS discs which are machine specific. Honestly, that is the first time that I ever came to know of such machine specific OS installation discs. I am aware of the serial numbers on windows installation discs, but not this!

Anyways. Thanks again for your help!

Regards,
Kamran

My pleasure.

In the past, prior to OS X, all Mac disks that came with machines were machine specific. They stop when OS X was released, but started again about a year ago.

At least we don't need serial numbers, and can install the retail versions on as many machines as you want to.
