Brightton,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.

Go to Applications>Utilities and start up Disk utility.

When that opens, click on the second icon at the top left, then click on the Repair Permissions button.

When done, quit Disk utility and give iMovie a try.

Brightton,

Does this happen only with iMovie?
What version of iMovie do you have?
What OS version are you running?

Brightton,

Go to Home>Library>Preferences. Trash the com.apple.iMovie.plist file.
Empty the trash

Next, go to Applications and and click once on the iMovie icon.
Go to the File menu and select Get Info
At the bottom of the window that opens is Ownership & Permissions.
It should say You can -- Read & Write.
If not, click on the arrow next to details.
Now the window will expand.
Owner may be set to System and there will be a locked pad lock to the right of it.
Click on the lock. You will be asked for your password. Type it in, then click okay.
Now change Owner to your user name using the pull down menu.
Make sure Access says Read & Write.
Now go up to You Can and change that to Read & Write.
Click on the lock to locked it.
Close the Window.
Now try opening iMovie from the Applications folder.

Brightton,

Since none of those tricks worked, it is time to reinstall iMovie. First you need to delete all the files for iMovie.

Go to Hard Drive>Library>Receipts. Trash the iMovie.pkg files. You may have a iMovie Update.pkg and that needs to be deleted as well.
Go to the Applications folder and trash iMovie and delete the iMovie from the dock if you have the icon there.

Now insert you iLife CD and just install iMovie. Once the install is done, you may need to restart the computer. Now you can install the update to iMovie.

You should be back in business now.
