Hi can anyone out there please help me "GO WIRELESS"! I have just purchased a Netgear WGR614 Wireless router which i need to connect to my ibook. My ibook is the 2003 model and i am running on tiger, but even though i managed to connect the router to my mac i have wires everywhere!! My ISP is Virgin Media and i have been connecting the modem to my ibook up until now. I have all the power cables attached and the router has both the ethernet cable from the modem and the other ethernet cable connected from the mac, however i just don't seem to be able to remove that cable plugged into the ibook and router without losing my connection to the net WHY??? I have spent over 12 hours phoning various technical support teams and got no results. The installation cd that came with the router is pc compatable only, please can someone out there help me figure this out? Many many thanks Amanda B

I have that same router. Maybe I can help.
First - the install CD is absolutely not required. Is your modem cable or DSL?
Have you been able to log into the router so you can see all the settings pages?
What have you set in there so far?
(my 614 is rev. 6 - some of the settings may be different)

Hiya!, Thankyou so much for your response, I think my modem cable is DSL as I only have telephone and broadband with Virgin Media and not television. I have been able to log into the netgear setup with a code i got given from a PC World technician ie: 192.168.01, i was told to type this in the address bar which took me to Netgear Setup, although i didn't see any settings and rev.6 i certainly don't remember coming across. I am totally relying on my connection of the modem with the ethernet cable to my ibook at the moment to use the internet. Will a wireless USB adapter help can you please tell me? I sincerely need a step by step guide to get through this i believe. Please help me sort this wireless connection!

OK,
I think you can use a USB wireless adapter - does the computer list "airport" in System Preferences > Network (ie, Network Prefs)? If so, drag "Airport" to the top of the list (where there is a red-yellow-green dot in front of each connection type).
Connect to the router (via browser) and make sure you see the Basic Settings page. Check Yes for require a login, select Other for ISP, enter your login and password, then check IP address: Get dynamically from ISP and Domain Name Server: Get automatically from ISP. From the buttons on the bottom of this page, click on Apply. We're going to one other page to check something -- in the list (purple background) at the left go to Advanced - Wireless settings. Make sure enable wireless radio and SSID broadcast are checked on. Click apply if you changed anything here. To exit from router setup, click Logout from the list on the left side (at bottom).
By the way, your login and password for the router are what you used before in network Prefs on the computer, to set up ethernet connection through the modem. The router becomes your login device, and your computer no longer uses login and password.
Come back to tell me how this has gone so far.

Can you help? Amanda B

If the USB wireless adapter is recognized by the iBook, it will show up in Network Prefs "show: Network status." Keep in mind that you may need to go to that pull-down menu "Show:" and add the wireless adapter in "Network Port Configurations."
You will need to either find an adapter that has mac drivers or with driver built-in on OS X, so it is recognized as available in Network prefs.
