I am using an iBook, PowerPC G4, Tiger 10.4.11, 1.07 ghz,
1GB DDR SDRAM. New battery 2/2007
Start up is OS X (rarely use OS 9 start up)
After using my iBook for about 90 minutes, it suddenly freezes.
The screen does not go blank. It freezes on the page I am on with the colored circle appearing but frozen.
I shut it down. When I go to start up again it starts up sometime later it starts up fine.
What could be making it freeze?
How can I correct that problem.
Thanks

Try repairing and verifying your disk permissions in disk utility.
That may make your laptop faster.

I have tried repairing and verifying the disk permissions in the disk utility before and it did not resolve the ibook from freezing.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

Ok.
Try booting to safe mode.
See if the problem persists.
Try zapping p-ram. holding Apple+Option+P+R when you first turn on the machine until you hear three start up chimes.

I zapped the p-ram.
I was on my computer for 105 minutes.
A buzzing began. I quit what I was doing.
Then the round colored ball started turning a few seconds then
froze along with computer.

I left the computer off for 5 minutes.
Then it will start again with out problems.
I just would like to know why it is freezing.
I looked in the library/logs/crash reports and there was nothing noted.

Have you installed any "heavy" software, which would use a lot of RAM and processor speed, such as Adobe Photoshop, Filemaker, etc?

I did install Hoyle Games (for OS X)-867.8 MB.
Do you think the noise that comes on before the freeze is the fan?
My iMac at present
Capacity: 37.1 GB
Available 21.1 GB
Used 16.1 GB

Are you doing anything in particular when the freezing occurs?
if not, try this.
Boot to Open Firmware.
Turn on the machine and immediately hold down Apple+Option+O+F until you see a white screen with black lettering.
then type reset NVRAM
and press enter.
then type in reset all
and press enter.
blacknosey - Feb 5, 2008 - 9:18 pm
I turned on the machine as you noted.
When I typed reset NVRAM, it says word unknown
When I typed reset all, it says word unknown
I went ahead and mac-boot
It froze again in about 90 minutes.
I turned it off then tried to turn it back on and got the kernel panic pane.
I turned it off for about 10 minutes then the computer started up okay.

It may be
Reset NVRAM
or
Reset nvram
try things like that,
blacknosey - Feb 6, 2008 - 10:36 am
I tried both.
It still says: reset, unknown word

Try Reseting your PMU.
hold shift+ctrl+option+apple+power for ten seconds. then turn on the machine.
blacknosey - Feb 9, 2008 - 6:39 pm
I tried resetting the PMU.
My computer stayed on two hours without a freeze.
I want to use my computer on Sunday for several hours and see that it continues not to freeze.
I'll get back to you Sunday night
Thanks

Monday Morning...
how did it go?
blacknosey - Feb 11, 2008 - 12:00 pm
For three days now it has not frozen.
Thanks so much for your help.
If it happens again I'll try resetting the PMU again
(unless you see that as a problem to do too often).
Thanks again for your patience in helping get my ibook working more efficiently.

The only problem is that is resets your unsaved settings, other than that you should be fine.
