Hi,
I recently bought ibook g4 [1,2 ghz] and I got some problems installing mac os. I got a 10.3 os x and I know that only newer versions of this distro will work - is that true? Because when I put cd in and boot with 'c' pressed it reads it a while and then it splits out [the same is with Yellow Dog linux]. After that Small dir icon of Mac Os appears flashing and changing with question mark shown in the same way. I thought that maybe I should get some msg that system is not compatible or something like this if it was but I don't have an idea what is going on. First I thought that maybe something is wrong with oprical drive but I also made an installation with my friend through firewire and it didn't help. Help! :]

Jacek,
is this a full version of 10.3 - or just an update?

It's full version.

The oldest version that a 1.2 GHz iBook will run is 10.3.3. More recent models that have 1.2 GHz in 12" displays, will not boot with anything less than 10.3.5
If the set you have is 10.3, then the iBook won't boot from it.
The iBook will boot from the CDs that shipped with it.
The 10.3 that I have seen for sale recently have all been 10.3.5. It's listed as that on the bottom of the Panther box, also on Disk 1 of the set. That's what you need.

Dale, you wrote that it won't boot from older osx's, but I made also firewire installation with other ibook - is it then about booting or it just won't run?
[I found similar problem someone had here - logo is shifting a little and some strange lines appear near it.]

If the OS is older than 10.3.3, it cannot boot your iBook. You may see a variety of different responses, but 'not booting' will be the main one.
An iBook G4 with 1.2 GHz processor will not boot if you try a system older than 10.3.3.
An older iBook G4 with a 800 or 933 MHz will boot OK with that, and a 14" with 1 GHZ also will boot with 10.3
A 1 GHz 12" display requires that minimum 10.3.3
Any OS older than that, can't boot on newer systems.
