Hi,
A g3 ibook running 9.2 at our non-profit has completely failed.
for awhile it went very slow but then it started clicking and would not boot. That's the condition it was in when I got it.
I ran texttool deluxe and it found the disk and made two repairs.
I decided to run techtool a second time and this time the disk failed and techtools said it could not repair this part of disk (can't be touched by software) and I should reformat. By this time the clicking was going on again, and the HD was no longer on the desk top. When I try to reboot I get the screen that flashes a small icon in the middle and then a question mark over and over. My question is "Can this ibook be saved" ? If it's the HD, how hard is it to replace it and is it worth trying?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Replacing the hard drive in an iBook isn't that difficult if you have the tools. This site shows how it's done. Note the caution on max drive height so you don't buy a drive that won't fit. Laptops use 2.5 inch pocket or notebook drives.

Thanks for your quick response.
I'm not sure that I could replace the HD myself. It is a white ibook that is a little more than 3 years old (just out of warranty)not a Clam shell ibook.
Do you have any idea how much it would cost to have someone do it?
Thanks,
Marie

No, I don't know what you would be charged since those costs can vary so much. If you go to an Apple service center I think you'll find the average hourly service charge will be somewhere around $65/hour. The drive cost will be dependent upon the size, speed, mfgr., and retailer. I would recommend you purchase a Seagate drive. You can find pricing and retailers at www.pricewatch.com.

Here's another guide, but for the white iBooks: http://www.yourmaui.com/ibook.html.

The following link is to MCE who have a drive replacement product/service.
