iChat works great when new iMac (leopard) is connected directly to modem. I recently purchased and set up a wireless network using Belkin N Wireless Router. iChat won't work. Hokk-up is as follows: Modem to router via ethernet cable. Router to iMac via ethernet cable. iChat works with AIM when ethernet cable is plugged directly into iMac but not when modem-router-computer. Please help. I am new to Mac OS (trying to get out of "windows" mode) so please be kind. Thanks!!

Dear James,
My name is Vinko and I will attempt to assist you.
Have you confirmed that your Belkin router has the latest firmware from Belkin?
Next you may want to check if the firewall on the Belkin is turned on. The
Support article from Apple may help you with configuring your Belkin. Although, you will need to check your Belkin instructions manual for configuring your Belkin as suggested by Apple.
I hope this helps.
Regards,

Thank you for using MacOSX.Com's free Mac support.

I have not been able to test it yet. The next time I try to iChat and it doesn't work I will disable the router's firewall and see if that works. I tried adding ports to the router firewall and they were incorrect. I will keep you posted. Thanks.

Todd,
I have some helpful hints that just may help you.
in the router's setup - turn off DMZ
In System Preferences>Sharing>Firewall - add those ports in that article creating a new Allow for iChat.

Cheryl,
I put my Mac in the DMZ as suggested. As far as the ports go; when I go to System Preferences>Sharing, Firewall isn't there. If I go to System Preferences>Security>Firewall it's there but I'm not sure where to go from there as far as typing in ports. Hopefully the DMZ will help but I haven't had the opportunity to try iChat again. Thannks for the help.

Todd,
Now I know how they changed Leopard vs Tiger.
To add an application to the list, select “Set access for specific services and applications” in the Firewall pane of Security preferences, click Add (+) at the bottom of the list, and then select what you want to add. After the program is added, click its up and down arrows to allow or block connections through the firewall.
Of course you want to allow.
Let me know if the hints work.

Cheryl,
There is joy in Mudville! Thank you for the tip. Another way I found around the problem (temporary in nature) was I went to iChat>Preferences>Server Settings and found the Port and (more importantly for Belkin) the Server name. With that info I opened the Belkin Router site, typed in the server info and Bingo! iChat with family on PC's and AIM, without having to disable the router firewall. My next task is to get my family to buy Macs. Wish me luck. Thanks again for the info.
