after many months of happy ichat use, I have been unable to access ichat for the last 2 weeks. When ever I hit the ichat icon, I get the following error message " The AIM service is temporarily unavailable. Wait several minutes and try again" This has been going on for 2 weeks now. I have not changed any settings, played around with servers, changed ISP....... In fact one minute it was working the next nothing. Any help???

I am not sure if this will help or not, so if it doesnt, please let e know and I will put the ticket back in the pool for another tech to answer.
About 2 weeks ago or so, AOL changed its login server procedure. I have a AIM application on my Blackberry that stopped working about the same time. I had to wait for an update to be released before it would work again.
I dont use iChat ( I use Fire - Multi Network Chat - AIM, Yahoo, MSN, etc. If you want to try Fire, head on over to
www.versiontracker.com and so a search for AIM or Fire and you will find a link to download )
Might try and see if iChat needs an update. Go to the Blue Apple in the upper left hand corner of your screen and click it. Choose "Software Update".
FYI, if there are updates available, but you dont see iChat update, install the updates anyway. Then run Software Update again, until no more updates are available. Sometimes certain updates will not show or allow you to install, until you update other software on the machine first.

Laurence, many thanks for getting back to me so promptly. Perhaps I should have mentioned in my original post, that I had already checked for updates, AOL and ichat. However, followed your suggestions and still no luck in logging on. Can't even retrieve my buddy list and have several mates and family members that I chat to both on and off cam, so getting very frustrated with not being able to access ichat. At my wits end here! Thanks again.

Peter
This could either be a problem with the AOL servers, which has been having this problem for awhile now, or your own ISP.
Get a free AIM screen name and setup iChat using that and see if you can use iChat.
You can download AIM here;
http://www.aim.com
It's free, just setup a screen name. See if AIM works for you. It's just text, no audio/video.
Once that works, quit it and open iChat and set it up to use the new AIM screen name and see if it works.

As if by magic ichat is back! Don't ask me why, but after 2 weeks of being down, I post one message to macos.com, don't even have chance to follow up on any of your advice and it just came back! So thanks. Peter
