I understand ichat uses less bandwidth than aol instant messenger. Can you tell me why that is?

iChat uses the H.264 codec for video chat with the introduction of OS X Tiger. It was using MPEG4 before. H.264 reduces the datarate while keeping the same quality video or better.
I'm not sure which codecs AIM uses, but MPEG4 must be one of them because it was compatible with iChat and still is, but I don't believe it uses H.264 yet which would make it use more bandwidth.
