Hi! I think I can help you. Go to this site to download Pacifist:
http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743
Pacifist is a great shareware program, but can be tried for free. Once you have pacifist downloaded, insert you Mac OS X install CD/DVD. Once the install CD/DVD is mounted on your desktop, launch the pacifist application. Once you get to the intial splashscreen (after the "please donate screen"), you should click on the option to "Open Mac OS X install packages". Pacifist may take a minute or so to do this, but will than present you with a list of install packages... scroll down to the iChat pkg., click on it to highight it, than click on the pacifist menu to "install". This should install the same version iChat that came with your machine... you may need to seek any iChat updates that have come out since you got your Mac at the Apple site, or run the last OS X Combo Updater appropriate for your OS version from the Apple site.
Hope this helps. Let us know!

i tried the Pacifist -- i found that on another search -- but it did not work -- i have the latest iChat update already downloaded, that is when i realized i had actually deleted the program by mistake -- is there anywhere i can just redownload the original program?
Is it on my disks that came with my computer???

I really appreciate your help! Happy Holidays

Yes, the original disks will have the install pkg for iChat - but you can't access them w/o a program like pacifist. You can do a complete re-install, (archive and install suggested), but pacifist should work for you in getting just the iChat pkg. If it did not work for you, can you tell me more details of what went wrong when using pacifist?

it made iCHat a text file in applications, which automatically then shut itself down

I think i understand what u need me to do now -- using my original disks -- then use Pacifist??? is that correct? I used Pacifist only on the update iChat A/V 2.1

I really appreciate all your help.

Jaimie - Yes, I think you see the problem! First, put the ORIGINAL CD/DVD with Mac OS X into your drive. Let that mount so you see it on your desktop... THAN, open Pacifist, and click on the option to "open Mac OS X install packages". Scroll down to the iChat pkg., highlight that pkg. and click on Pacifist to install. This should work! Good luck, and let me know if you have any continuing problems. Remember, use Pacifist with your original install CDs/DVD - not the iChat updater you have downloaded.
