My icons and folders will not drag. i can click on them, and they highlight, but they will not drag. The cursor moves but the icons remain in the same position. I am also not able to drag layers or objects in programs such as Adobe After Effects or Photoshop. Is there a way to fix this?

Nic,
It could be that your permissions are not set correctly. Go to the Utility folder (in Applications) and select Disk Utility. When that opens, click on the second icon at the left. - This icon should have the name of your hard drive.
Now click on Repair permissions. When done, quit Disk utility and give a folder a trial drag.

thank you for the quick response. i tried your idea but it still did not work. is there anything else i can do?
Cheryl - Mar 24, 2005 - 6:35 pm
Nic,
How are you set as the user in Accounts? Are you the Admin or a standard user? If you are logged in as a Standard User, you probably have some limits set on your user account.
If you are the Admin, then you have to do a check to see if this is system wide or just your user account.
Create a new account and log into that account. Can you drag and drop with the new account?

Nic,
Did you install anything right before this happened? Did you trash or delete any files or folders in an attempt to clean up the hard drive?
Do you have an extra mouse that you can try? This is just to make sure it is not the mouse itself that is causing the problem.
Do you have the OS X CD handy?

hello. i had installed some software that i found that came with my wacom tablet. on it were adobe elements 2.0, corel painter essentials 2.0, niK color efex 2.0, and wacom brushes 2.0. i have been using my tablet for about 6 months previous to this problem, though. i did unplug it and try the default mac mouse, and the same thing happened. no dragging.
i do have my mac os x 2.8 cd still

Nic,
I do have a few more suggestions.
Delete the icon cache found in /Library/Caches/ whose name is "com.apple.dock.iconcache" (this is the Library folder on your hard drive sitting by itself, not within another folder)
Next, delete these files from the Preference folder located here;
home>Library>Preferences
com.apple.desktop.plist
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
Then restart. Empty the trash and give the mouse a try.
It might be easier to find these files by selecting by List in the view menu. That will put all the files in the window in alpha order.
Do you have OS 9 system folder on your computer? It could be that CarbonLib in the OS 9 side that is causing the trouble.
Download the latest version here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120047
Restart in OS 9 (go to the System Preferences>Startup Disk. Select OS 9, click restart) and install the updater. You will need to restart the computer after the install is done. It will automatically restart in OS 9. Now go to the Apple Menu>Control Panels>Startup Disk and select OS X and click on restart.
Give the mouse a test run.

hello. these both did not work. the first idea actually made it so my background image reverted to the default and cannot be changed, and sound will not come out of my computer. pressing the volume up or down buttons doesn't do anything anymore and pressing the mute button flashes the icon, but with no bar at the bottom that normally indicates the volume.
Cheryl - Mar 25, 2005 - 7:55 pm
Nic,
You need to start up the computer using the OS X CD. Just insert the CD, select restart from the Apple Menu and immediately hold down the C key.
Continue to hold down the C key until you see the installer screen.
Do not click on the installer screen. Go to the Installer Menu and select Disk utility. When that opens, select the second icon from the left, then click on Repair Drive at the bottom right.
You need to watch the activity screen to make sure it says Appears Okay. If it does any repairs, you need to click on Repair Drive again. Continue to do this until the activity screen says Appears Okay.
When done, click on Repair permissions.
If the activity screen says that the drive needs repairs that it can not do, you need to use Disk Warrior or Drive 10 to repair the drive. The CD for both of these utilities are bootable and works similar to the What you just did with the OS CD.
What I am trying to avoid is a clean install which is called archive and preserve in OS X.

ok. i did the archive and install thing when nothing else worked. this worked. the icons can drag again!!! woohoo
some of the settings, such as what i named my hard drive, as well as all the applications i previously had, are still on my computer and where they were. My old account files, such as pictures, word documents, etc, are not there tho. Are they any where on the computer or should i just drag them back on my computer from my backup external hard drive?
Cheryl - Mar 25, 2005 - 10:10 pm
Nic,
I am very glad that you are back to working smoothly.
Your old account files should be there in your Home folder. If you saved them elsewhere on the hard drive, check the Previous System folder. If they are not in that folder, then you can get them from your back up.
How did you do the backup? If you used Carbon Copy Cloner, you should be able to use that to move the files to your hard drive.

actually my backup system is quite archaic and lacking. i just drag all my files onto my external hard drive and they copy over. is there a better way that you could recommend?
Cheryl - Mar 25, 2005 - 10:49 pm
Nic,
OS X has many invisible files that are associated with your folders. In order to make a usable back up, I suggest you use Carbon Copy Cloner. You can download from here:
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
For now, those images and documents will probably move over easily.
