TICKET ARCHIVE -> iDVD is quitting

My iDVD is quitting half way through the rendering process of a DVD. It does not reach the burn stage and it seems to quit at a different place each time. I have tried reinstalling it without success. As far as I can see everything else is working ok.
I use OSX 10.4.6 on a PPC G4 (1GB & 1Ghz) and have been using iLife06 since March this year.
Also, I had to reinstall the OSX system to upgrade to a larger hard drive during April and I think occurred after this. I have sent fail report logs to Apple over the last few days. Perhaps I could send you a screen capture of the log report? Do you think there is an easy solution to my problem?
Regards

Hi C :-)

My name is Carolyn and maybe I can help a little.

The first thing that popped into my head after I read your post is this. How much free space is left on the drive? I understand you upgraded to a larger hard drive but if it has less than 15% available space on it, programs that require major space like iDVD will quit unexpectedly. I use iDVD also. I save my projects to either my iPod or my other Mac so the Mac I use the most to create the projects has plenty of free space available. If you aren't certain how much space is available on your PPC G4, do the following: You posted that your drive is only 1GB in size?

The easiest way to check this is to click any free space on your Desktop. Now, in the menu click View>Shop Options. A pane will open. Click the button where it says: Show Item Info Now look at your MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. It should indicate the size of your drive and and how much space is FREE. If it's less then 15% of the total drive size, you need to copy files over to a backup drive to free space up.

If you have not already done so, try deleting the following preference file:
com.apple.idvd.plist Follow this path to locate the file:
MacintoshHD>Users>Library>Preferences. You will find that file in the Preferences folder. Drag it to the Trash, then empty the Trash. Reboot, and try iDVD.

The log reports sent to Apple are written for their programmers. But, you can copy and paste the log into a post here and I can at least read it.

Your Mac has a SuperDrive??? Or is this an external DVD burner? iDVD will only work on Mac internal SuperDrives.

Please post back and we'll try to figure this out :-)

And thanks for using Macosx.com!

Hello Carolyn
Thanks for the solution. IDVD seems to be back to its old self again. It would appear the plist item did the trick.
The 1Gb RAM was of course my SDRAM and not my hard drive;-D
Best wishes

Hi C ^5

Yahooooo, I'm so glad it worked for you... ok 1Gb of RAM. Had me going there for a second ;-) .... keep the info on the .plist trick, that can happen with any software on a Mac and they all have Preferences that for one reason or another can get corrupted.

Also, make sure you have a minimum of 15% free drive space to run iDVD to create projects but especially when it comes time to burn.

I love happy endings!

Thanks again Carolyn
I`ll keep an eye on the 15% disk space too. I never realized this was so important.
I also love happy endings, but I better not get specific on that (hehehe);-D
Thanks again for your time and knowledge
Take care
C
