I'm trying to compile a DVD for a college lecture series using clips from various DVDs. I've tried ripping these files into mpegs or quicktime movie files, though neither format will work with iDVD. I've been using Handbrake software to rip the clips but will soon begin using Wondershare's DVD ripper in order to trim the clips.

Now, whenever I try and burn an iDVD using these dvd clips, I get this message when I try and burn the DVD: "WARNINGS IN PROJECT, There were warnings during the project validation. It is recommended that you fix these problems before burning the project." Yet iDVD offers no list of what the problems are and I cannot successfully burn this DVD.

I'd like to know exactly what I have to do (what files I must convert, what available and preferably free programs to use) in order to successfully burn these clips onto a DVD with a menu. Thank you.

Jeff,

Before I start, you may need to be aware the the tech support here at www.macosx.com will not assist you in any way when it comes to pirating copyrighted material. If the DVDs you are attempting to rip are protected, then we won't be able to help you. That being said...

The following video and image formats are not supported in iDVD:

Copyrighted or protected videos.

Movies saved in thousands of colors using the “none” compression setting in iMovie.

48-bit color images (16 bits per color). To use source files in one of these formats in iDVD, save them in a supported format.

Aurora uncompressed files. For best results, export Aurora clips as DV-format video before importing them into iDVD.

QuickTime VR, MPEG-1 or MPEG-2, Flash, streaming or encrypted movies, or QuickTime spanned movies. You can’t add MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files to an iDVD project because they don’t contain standard video tracks.

QuickTime Fast Start movies. (Fast Start movies are intended for Internet playback.) When saving a QuickTime movie for use with iDVD, click the Options button in the QuickTime Export dialog and make sure that the “Prepare for Internet Streaming” checkbox is not selected.
