Hi. I'm playing single dad off from work this week, and my project is to transfer movies from Hi8 to DVD.
I've filled up my HD with iMovie and iDVD projects, and my bottleneck now is burning.
I'm using an Emprex brand (bah) 16x DVD rw burner; I've used patchburn 4.0.3 to update my system to allow this. I've also recently upgraded to tiger, and I'm using iLife 4 (iDVD 4.0).
When I tell iDVD to burn, it gets to stage 4, and then spits out the disk and eventually comes back with an illegal CDB error (0x24, 0x00). This has occurred with TDK DVD-R 16x, Memorex DVD-R 8x, and Maxell DVD-R 4x media.
I've installed the iDVD upgrade to 4.0.1; I'm trying it now.
Also, earlier this morning, I did successfully burn a DATA DVD (user account backup) using Disk Utility.
I think I'm at the point where it's time to return the Emprex DVD drive and get something more directly supported.
do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Michael
I found a solution... I went to the local Apple Store and the Genius there said that iDVD only supported selected drives, which I was concerned about.
While waiting for him, I surfed and found what later turned out to be a better solution: an easter egg for iDVD4 that allows me to save a disk image, so that I can burn multiple copies (for grandparents) later using Disk Utilites. I've confirmed this with one ~30 minute DVD; I'm working on a 72 minute DVD now, and I hope iDVD is smart enough to make the image such that it'll fit on a DVD-R disk.

I hope that fixed your problem. A couple of things you might consider to make your life easier: iLife 5 out of the box allows burning to a disk image. You can then use the finder to burn, or another program such as Toast. If the drive is questionable, splurge on a new drive. The "Superdrives" which I believe are largely Pioneer DVR-107,108,109 are really cheap now.
Good luck. I'm in charge of all the video->digital transfers in our house as well.
