If you Boot off the OS CD by holding the C key down. and after the Installer window appears, go up to the Installer Menu to Disk Utility and use that to Repair Disk....will I lose everything on my computer or will it just fix my slow start-up. Because that's my problem.
I have already tried the following.
1 - Go to your Startup PreferencePane in the System Preferences and choose your drive to boot from. Sometimes this can eliminate startup times.
2 - Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder and use that to Repair Permissions.
3 - A large amount of fonts, or a bad font can cause slow startups also.
Now I want to try the Repair Disk but am worried about losing Data or programs I have installed.
Anyone know?
THANKS, Mikel S. Rosenthal

Hi Mikel
No, you won't lose anything, it will just repair any problems. If it does find and fix any problems, run it again until it says no problems found.

2 - Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder and use that to Repair Permissions.
3 - Boot off the OS CD by holding the C key down. After the Installer Window appears, go up to the Installer Menu to Disk Utility and use that to Repair Disk. Restart after that.

Have you added any fonts?
Has this machine ever been connected to a Network?
What model Mac is this?
What version of OS X is installed?
How much memory is installed?

I'm home now and the computer is at work.
This is what i remember.
It's been like this sense i started working on it.
Could be a font..was wondering if there was some
utility that would check corrupt fonts.
Anything you know of? Easy way to weed out the bad?
The machine is connected to our office network.
It's a Power Mac G4
1.25Ghz
OSX 10.3.7 i think
Almost 2 gigs of memory in it.
I disabled all but the system fonts in Font Book to see if that might be an issue...I bet you have to remove them from the folder all together to find out. Not sure if you have any more info on that. I would guess Network or Font.
Any guidance would be well taken as I am running out of options.
Thanks,
Mikel Rosenthal

Mikel
If a network volume is set to mount at startup, this will cause a slow startup.
I would completely disable FontBook and see if that makes a difference. I've seen reports of problems with it.
FontDoctor is a program you can use to check fonts;

I'm taking out all the fonts that FontDoctor told me were bad...I don't want to buy the program so I'm just doing them one at a time.
How would I disable all of Font Book at once?
Just curious.
Thanks,
Mikel Rosenthal

Mikel
From the Help Menu;
Double-click Font Book in the Finder, or choose Manage Fonts from the Action pop-up menu in the lower-left corner of the Font panel.
Select the fonts you want to turn off in the Font column.
Select an entire collection in the Collection column, or select individual fonts in the Font column.
Choose Edit > Disable Fonts or Edit > Disable Font Collections.

Sorry to keep bothering you, i really do appreciate your help.
Here is where I'm at now.
1. I disabled Font Book and all the fonts (Even removed the ones that FontDoctor said were messed up. I put them in a folder, a few I couldn't find but the main ones it said there were problems with I took out.
2. Unplugged from the Network and Restarted a few times.
Still having the slow start up..usually takes over 10 minutes.
It's after the start up screen where it loads the network, etc.
It's when the wallpaper is up, and the Rainbow pinwheel is spinning. It just spins and spins for about 10 to 12 minutes before it will get to the normal desktop.
If you don't think there is anything i could do then thats ok...I still appreciate your help, But if you have any last suggestions that would be great.
Sincerely,
Mikel Rosenthal

Check your Startup Items in the Accounts PreferencePane and see what's in there set to start at login.
Look in the Startup Items folders to see whats in there;
Library>Startup Items

Here is what I have under Library > Startupitems
2 folders
Folder 1. AdobeVersionCueCS2 > Inside Folder A. AdobeVersionCueCS2 B. StartupParameters.plist C. VersionCueCS2Daemon
Folder 2. Tablet > Inside Folder A. StartupParameter.plist B. Tablet C. TabletDriver D. TabletDriverRelauncher.
I don't use AdobeVersioniCueCS2 or Tablet...should i just move those out of the start up?
bobw - Jul 5, 2005 - 11:10 am
Mikel
I would move both those folders out of the Startup items and see if it helps.

Nope. Still takes about 10 to 12 minutes even after taking those out of Library > StartupItems
BUT:
Under
System > Library > Startupitems
There is a whole bunch of stuff listed.
Accounting
AMD
Apache
APpleShare
AppServices
AuthServer
BIND
ConfigServer
CoreGraphics
CrashReporter
Cron
DirectoryServices
Disks
IPServices
KernelEventAgent
LDAP
LoginWindow
mDNSResponder
NetInfo
Network
NetworkExtensions
NetworkTime
NFS
NIS
Portmap
Postfix
Printing Services
RemoteDesktopAgent
SecurityServer
SNMP
SystemLog
SystemTuning
Under System Folder > Startup Items
Airport Setup Assistant
I don't know if that helps at all.
These are outside of Library but they might make sense to you.
If we are out of options I understand.
Thanks for the help.

Don't move anything out of this folder;
System > Library > Startupitems
=====================================
If you have a Servers folder on the drive, remove anything in it.
Then look in this folder;
user>library>Recent Servers
Move everything in there out to a new folder on the Desktop.
Use the Go Menu to Connect to Server - remove any servers listed there.
Restart and see if it's any better.

I think i did all the correctly.
I think it starts up within 5 to 6 minutes on just that screen...So i think it might be better

Even that is better from what I did have...it was about double that..still takes a while but not as long.
You think I should just leave it or anything else i should try.
Your AWSOME btw.
thank,

We're making progress
Now, trash these Preference files;
com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
com.apple.loginwindow.plist
Check the mac.com PreferencePane if you have a mac.com account, make sure it's not set to sync automatically.
Anything else yopu may have that syncs could slow startup depending on what it is.

There is quite a few things in there.
Should i throw out anything with the extention .plist?
Also have some folders like
Adobe Systems
CanoScan LiDE 500F
DirectoryService
DRM
Network
SystemConfiguration
there are files in there too.
Are most things in here safe to throw away?
bobw - Jul 5, 2005 - 1:39 pm
Mikel
Just trash these two files;
com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
com.apple.loginwindow.plist
located here;
user>library>preferences
==================================
These are in Library>Preferences; (leave alone)
Adobe Systems
CanoScan LiDE 500F
DirectoryService
DRM
Network
SystemConfiguration
=================================
I would check any applications from Adobe and in the preferences, see if any are set to check for updates automatically.

I got rid of:
com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
com.apple.loginwindow.plist
as well as:
com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
Now it just makes it so I have to log on but still takes a long time till I get to the desktop. I'm not sure what other places to look.
Sorry for being a pest

If we are out of options i totally understand.

Go back to the Startup Disk PreferencePane and re-choose the startup disk, since all this has been done, may help.
My only other suggestion would be to download and install the 10.3.9 Combo Update;

Trash that download and download it again. Somehow the download is corrupt. This sometimes happens.

GUESS WHAT BOBBY MY FRIEND!

It could have been the Selecting of the Startup again.
I don't know why the second time it would but that may be the reason.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
One quick last thing..is there a way to make it auto log into my account like it used to...It has me log in now every time and it used to just log directly into mine..im the only one using this computer....WOW...
Your Truely Awsome....15 to 20 Seconds BOB! thats Awsome!

bobw - Jul 5, 2005 - 3:20 pm

If everything's ok, no need to do the update.
But, you can also try usng Software Update (in Preferences) to update.
