Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Hardware
Computer Type: Apple
Model: IIvx
RAM: 64meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: System 7.x

Description:
My IIvx floppy drive just lost capability to recognize or work with high-density disks. "Erase" function shows option for only 800k formatting; inserting formatted hfs hd disk results in "This disk is unrecognizable" alert. Double density disks continue to read, write and format fine. Have zapped PRAM, but cannot reinstall system software on either bootable hard drive since floppy won't read either install or system tools disk (1440k). Did boot computer from Norton Emergency CD Rom (System 7.6.1) and inserted HD disk, same probelm. Any ideas?

Spencer,

The Mac recognizes HD disks by the second hole in the corner, opposite from the write protect lock. This is I believe a purely mechanical sensor, as you can fool the Mac into believing a HD is a DD by taping the hole. Open your box and see if the sensor pin is bent or broken.
