I installed iLife'05 only to discover that many features do not work well on my Powerbook G4 400MHZ even though the software literature says it is compatible.

Slide-shows no longer work in full screen (black border all around) and image quality is poor. I think my 8MB video card is not sufficient to benefit from the upgrade (wasted 140 bucks!).

I am trying to uninstall iPhoto (05) so that I can reinstall iphoto (04) from my ilife'04 DVD. I trashed the application files for the 05 version and tried to load the 04, but the iLife 04 installer will not let me select iphoto in the custom install window.

Desperado to get my iphoto 04 back.

Appreciate any words of advice!

I'm almost certain that the reason you are lacking so many features is exactly as you suspected. Apple's software and OS features that take advantage of Core Image frameworks and Quartz Extreme will simply not work on graphics cards that aren't sufficient.

I had the same disappointment. Tiger's new interface promises so many cool effects (especially on the dash) but because its all using the Quartz Extreme engine, my little 16MB AGP card wont even try to show it.

The Installer program in Mac OS X keeps Receipts of your installations. The reason why it wont let you select to install iPhoto 04 is because the Installer doesn't want to let you accidentally over-write a newer version of already installed software with an older version. This could potentially cause all sorts of problems since most software writers only expect you to upgrade (not downgrade).

To work around this, all you have to do is remove the receipt for iPhoto.

1) Navigate to /Library/Receipts
2) Move the following files out of that folder:
- "iPhoto.pkg"
- "iPhotoContent.pkg"
3) Run the iLife 04 installer.

Hopefully the installer will let you install iPhoto 04 now. If it doesn't, try removing "iLife 05.pkg" out of the Receipts folder as well.

Let me know if this works!
