To make a long story short, I'm a PC guy suddenly in the position of having to support Mac workstations in my company's design department- honestly I'm not very experienced with using, let alone supporting Macs, so I really need some insight on this one.
One of my users is running a Mac G4, 1 GHz processor, 768MB RAM, Mac OSX 10.2.8. His issue is with his Illustrator 10.0.3. As he describes it-
- The program is extremely slow launching
- Text fields condensing after either Saving or switching to other running programs.
- The program hangs when working on multiple files (files are relatively small, no bigger than 3MB each)
If anyone could give me some information on how to correct this, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance-
Doug

Howdy!
Need some details on your network. Is your user attached to a network? Are the files he/she is working on located on that network? Any placed images in those files?
Something you can do on any mac as regular maintenance: Utilities/Disk Utility/Disk First Aid Tab/Repair Permissions. Do this every two weeks or so.
If the problem persists you can do these things:
* Search for "Illustrator" and move .pref and .plist files for it to the desktop. Restart Illustrator and it will recreate these files. These files get corrupted often.
* Use the Disc 1 System Disc, reboot with it, and run Repair Disk from the File Menu. Don't reinstall OS X.
Let me know how this goes. Coincidentally, I just bought a Dell Inspiron B130 to go with my PowerBook G4...It's been good for me to get this new PC perspective. (Shock, horror! He he)

Hi!
Thanks for the reply!
Yes, he is accessing the files on our network. When the Mac users log in, they 'mount' the server on which their files are stored. I'm not sure what you mean by 'placed' images, but I can certainly ask him. If you mean do the files have links to other image files, I believe they do.
I actually did run the disk utilities, and that seemed to clear up some system crashing issues that he was experiencing, though not the problem with the Illustrator.
Your suggestion about deleting the pref and plist files sounds good, I'll definitely check that tomorrow.
I'm definitely 'learning by doing' with the Macs, it's been very eye-opening! I'll let you know how things go-

Is the server an os x server or Pc server? Makes a difference for file permissions which is an entirely different ball of wax.

By placed images I do mean images that are linked into an Illustrator file.
(BTW, if your designers are doing their layouts in Illustrator I'll scream; InDesign is much better for that)

The server is a Windows 2003 server. So far, he's had no issues with permissions, or not being able to access certain files.
And yes, they're using Illustrator for their layouts; I'm not well versed in either Illustrator or InDesign, so I'll have to take your word for it that InDesign is better. They're pretty solidly entrenched with using Illustrator, so I don't know that I'll be seeing them change anytime soon

Unfortunately, recreating the .pref file didn't do the trick. I'm wondering if I should try uninstalling and reinstalling the application- what is the 'proper' way to do that on a Mac? Thanks-

Have you first tried updating Illustrator? Click in the tool bar when the program's open (at the very top where the pink flower is) and see if there are any updates to his version of illustrator.
To reinstall, simply find "Illustrator" and remove any files you find. Then reinstall. You'll find macs aren't good with Uninstallers for their apps...
