I'm running MacOs 10.3.9 and and using Adobe Illustrator CS. Last week Illustrator suddenly wouldn't open, for no apparent reason. After spending nearly all day trying to get it working I ended up reinstalling it, which worked - great!

Today, its started doing exactly the same thing again - I try to open Illustrator, I get the splash screen, it starts initialising fonts and then quits out. I then get the message box that its unexpectedly quit and do I want to send a report to Apple.

I've tried binning the preferences and I've verified disk permissions. I've also tried restarting with no extensions on, nothing works! I haven't installed or downloaded anything recently either.

I know I coud reinstall it again but if its only going to last 10 days at a time, it doesn't seem worth it.

Any help much appreciated!

Hi! Did you actually repair permissions instead of just verifying them?

What other programs are you running simultaneously? What images do you have placed in Illustrator when it crashes?

Hi - yes I repaired permissions as well. Other programs running were Suitcase 11, Microsoft Entourage and Quark.

I didn't have any images placed in Illustrator as it doesn't get that far! It won't even let me create a new blank document.

Thanks.

Usually Futura is the culprit.

Hi - I've just moved house so hadn't had the chance to try your suggestion. I have now got rid of Futura, which didn't work, I also tried changing the time zone at the suggestion of someone else, which also didn't work. In desperation as I need to use Illustrator I have just reinstalled it again. It still won't work! Is there anything else I can possibly try?

Did you repair permissions and delete Illustrator's preference file?

Yes I tried doing both of those. I also tried creating a new account and logging in as a different user. Strangely Illustrator then worked okay on the new account. The only different thing I could see between the two accounts, is that the one that did work didn't have Extensis Suitcase installed. Would it be worth reinstalling that on the account that doesn't work?

Open FontBook and see which fonts are activated. If you have a lot of fonts enabled try disabling all but the necessary system fonts.

Where do you store your fonts for Suitcase? If you have them in System/fonts I recommend moving them out of there and just putting them in the first level of your hard drive directory. (Just inside the hard drive.)

Start Illustrator with the minimum of fonts activated. If Illustrator starts working you know you have a corrupted font. If you have Font Doctor for Mac you might want to run it to find corrupted fonts, or just have Suitcase do this: Tool/Scan and Repair Selected Fonts.

Let me know if this helps.

It worked! I tried the easiest/quickest thing first which was the scan/repair option in Suitcase. There were some fonts that were damaged beyond repair (mainly Garamond) which I deleted. That was at the end of yesterday and Illustrator has worked fine all of today. Fingers crossed, it continues to work!

Thanks very much for all your help, judging from other Mac forums this seems to be quite a common problem with Illustrator.

Thanks again.

Yep, not only with Illustrator but with fonts as well. I'd say that of all the Adobe apps, Illustrator is the one with the most issues.

Glad I could help, and come back whenever you need assistance.
