The modem in my mom's imac G3-350 (6GB HD) has died. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement. Obviously Apple is useless for this. Also, have pulled apart numerous machines in the past, including 1 imac, but if you know of any instructions to follow for replacement, those would be helpful too.
Thanks in advance for any help

Steve,

It could well prove tricky finding a supplier for internal imac modems due to the age of the machine. Probably quite expensive too! Might well be worth phoning a few well known mac suppliers though. I don't know where you live from but in the UK I'd look to Computer Warehouse and Mac Warehouse as well as trawling the magazine ads (and google) for suppliers of secondhand gear. Its a bit of a long shot but Ebay can often be useful in situations like this.

Its likely that basic instructions will be included with the new modem. I've managed to replace one in a 333MHz imac (same thing really) and it was pretty painless. You can look at this doc for instructions on how to get into you machine...

The other route would be to use an external USB modem. They are still available and most mac suppliers will be able to provide one for you. Again, mags and google should bring up some results for you (try usb modem mac). Just make sure the drivers are compatible with your OS (9?).

feel free to get back to me if there is anything further I can help you with.

regards

Tom

tom,

Thanks for the insight. I found an outfit in CA called DVwarehouse that seems to have quite a bit of stuff for old macs. They had six different types of modems, based on imac machine and model! Found the one I am looking for. It's $45. Do you think an external is going to be much cheaper? If it isn't, I'd rather replace what's there. If I can get an external for cheap, then I'd go that route.

Thanks so much for the fast response. You guys have become a great new utitlity to me.

Steve,

Well if it was me I'd go for the internal modem. There's probably not much difference in price (I googled and found a USB modem in the States for $60!) but more importantly you'll end up with a less complicated system, with a free USB port. I guess if you shop around you may find one a bit cheaper but frankly I was expecting it to be more expensive - there can't be much demand for internal G3 imac modems!

I'd say keep things simple and give your Mum back the system she is used to.

Understand this is only my opinion though. We can't be seen to be endorsing or recommending any purchases here.

Regards

Tom
