I have been having this ongoing problem
I'll be working on either safari or final cut epress and the mouse/keyboard stops working, video freezes and all applications stop then the fans inside the imac start to speed up until it sounds like the imac is about to take flight, The only upgrade to the standard imac g5 17' is i installed another 512 ram in the second slot to increase ram 768 and installed final cut express HD. externally have Lacie hard drive and dvd burner,

searched forums similar problems but all seem to relate to usb errors and no mention of fans revving up.

i thank you for you responses ahead of time

Hi Bruno,

iMac G5 are known to have issues with overheating, which leads to kernel panics (screen darkens and a box with messages in multiple language appears) and fan blasting at full speed. If your iMac is still under warranty, contact Apple and ask them to sort this out. If not, try going to System Preferences -> Energy Saver and change Processor Performance to Automatic instead of Highest. If that didn't work, try taking out the extra RAM you put in and see if things improve. Bad ram can cause problems like this. However, be prepared that you might eventually have to send the iMac to the shop.

Let me know if you need more information.
