I have newish imac g5 1.8gz, 512mb, 17"(four months now), and since osx updates (first to 1.3.7 and now 10.3.9)I have had problems getting sleep mode to sleep as it should. Screen goes off as I have set it to, but the light marking the state of the computer stays on. I have a scanner and wideband-cablemodem connected to computer all the time, but I have also tried disconnecting them, which did not help either.
I am not entirely sure, when did this first happen, but it was about the same time I did the first updates of the system.
It goes to sleep when I put it separately.
As I have understood, this problem seems to be quite common with some imac g5 users, and you propably have answered this already, but this is my first computer, and I don't yet know so much about these forums and where to find information, so please enlighten me.

The white light on the front of the computer should only come on briefly when you first start the computer, and then come on when you put it to sleep, or when the computer goes to sleep automatically. So, the light should be on when sleeping. It will be 'pulsing' or slowly flashing anytime it sleeps, The light will then go off when you wake the computer, and will normally be off.

Perhaps you mean that your computer does not go to sleep automatically, but will go to sleep when you manually choose sleep.

Do you have an external USB hub attached to the system?

Sorry that I did not write specifically enough. Yes, the problem is that it does not go to sleep automatically, but goes to sleep when I choose manually sleep.
When it should go automatically, first the screen goes off as it should, but the white light on the front comes on and stays on but does not start flashing. And you can hear that the machine is still running. At least the fans.
I don't have an external hub attached.
