I have just received an iMac M5521, 400mhz w/ 10GB HD. I was told there was something wrong during the boot process before accepting. The display comes alive, the apple appears in the center of the screen, then a blank rectangular window approx 3" tall by 5" wide opens over the top of the apple, and everything stops. I wasn't provided any disc's to work with... but did get the original keyboard.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Charlie,
The description sounds like what is called a kernel panic. I am assuming that you are using the original keyboard and mouse. If that is all that is connected to the machine, the problem is probably the memory RAM that is installed. OS X is very sensitive to failing and strange components.
What you will have to do is open the case to check out the memory sticks. You need PC100 3.3v 168 pin SDRAM. There are two slots so you can get two 256MB or 512MB sticks.
This web site gives instructions on how to open the iMac:

Once you have it running, check to see what OS version it has. You can do that by going to the Apple Menu at the far left and select About this Mac. The window that comes up will show you the OS version.
You should have an OS install disk or a third party utility such as Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro. Using the CD to start up the computer will bring up the utility so you can scan the hard drive and repair any problems with it.
Your iMac can run the latest OS X version - you can upgrade to 10.4.9.
