Description:
I'm looking for a good data backup strategy for my iMac. Are there any tape drives that will work with the iMac, perhaps something like a QIC drive with a 4GB capacity? Any other ideas?

Thanks. Happy New Year.

Hi George, thanks for firing a question to us.

The iMac is a great computer, but one thing it cant do yet is Tape Drives. There aren't any available on the market... yet. Thats not to say next week four won't appear on the shelves, but as of yet nothing has been said.

Don't let your hopes die, there are many aspects of the iMac we can use to get around this problem. Any tape drive with a SCSI interface can work with any Mac before the iMac. You can get a cheap ($100 or so) Mac with ethernet (most older Quadras 605 through the 840's have built in or you could go with an older MacII or SE/30 with an ethernet card). Link them with ethernet and use Retrospect remote to do a backup.

In a small variation you could link them with an Irda component, and utilize the IR port on your iMac's left speaker. This isn't as fast as ethernet, but no ugly cables. 5Mbits/sec as opposed to 10-100Mbit/sec

A setup like this would also be great for printserving, fileserver, fax server, an internet router, and many others. Let your secondary mac do the menial tasks of backup, printing, file sorting, and the like and let your main Mac do your bidding. This all takes a few extra dollars a little time to setup, but once you get it crusing you'll be set up.
