with disk utility and fsck, my disc shows an error that cannot be repaired- although the computer seems ok, I would like to be certain that this will not cause me problems down the road- it is"extended attributes file invalid key length (8,1) "- apple support could not help- additionally, norton utilities was unable to repair this. Is this necessarily a problem? for all I know, it may have been like this for some time even prior to upgrade to tiger (from 10.2.8) or it could it fact be new... any thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Mike, welcome on macosx.com

The only software whcih can help you on this point is DiskWarrior from www.alsoft.com (commercial)

Norton Utilites (I say Utilities, not the Norton Anti Virus program) is one of the worst program for the mac: it can report problem where there are none, or make worst things when trying to repair.

So if you can use your mac normally, I would not worry too much on this issue.
I would repair permissions on a regular base through DiscUtility and run Macjanitor
http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_...acjanitor.html
for the maintenance scripts
(The maintenance scripts are Unix scripts which are automatically ran on your
Mac between 02Am and 04 am..if your Mac is on at this moment.
I can advice you to run, through Macjanitor, the daily script each day, the week script each week, ..and so on)

If one day your Mac starts to face major problems, it would be the moment to worry about !

Philippe

thank you- I actually ran out and purchased DW- it rebuilt the directory but said I could not replace it since the original was so badly damaged.. On their site, they also implied that Norton may have made things worse- but is it possible for my Mac to seem AOK with a disc/directory which cannot be fixed or replaced?
I appreciate the advice

> but is it possible for my Mac to seem AOK ..
Well, Mike, yes, you can still work on such a disk.
I guess that if DW has refused to update the catalog, that's mainly because Norton has damaged it..Get rid of of Norton on your mac !

Backup on regular base
And the best solution will be a re-install on a "Erase&Install"...one day !

Regards
Philippe
