Hello Tech -support,

I am having serious problems with Imovie HD 6.0.3 unexpectedly quitting after deleting transitions. Recently, I upgraded to Quicktime Pro 7.4.1. The crashes are happening every time I delete a transition. I have seen on the Mac support site that others have had this problem, but no definitive solution as of yet.

So far I have deleted the imovie plist file and repaired the disk permissions as other posts have suggested. I have 45GB of free space on the hard drive.Unfortunately, I am way from home at the moment and do not have my install discs to attempt a reinstall. Any ideas or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Hello Tech Support,

I have deleted my problem video file and have started again from scratch. Things seem to be working OK for now. Could you tell me which video editing software is considered the most stable on the Mac? After spending hours working on a project only to have to start again, has me shopping for different software. Thanks.

You're not alone in your problems with iMovie. Unfortunately, I don't know of an exact fix, but you can try some general troubleshooting steps.

1. Delete iMovie's .plist/preference file. It's in /users//library/preferences

2. Downgrade Quicktime. You mentioned you had recently upgraded. iMovie depends on components from Quicktime. You can download Quicktime 6 here:
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Video/A...uickTime.shtml

3. You can manually delete the transitions by clicking "open package contents" when selecting your iMovie file, clicking the "Media" folder, and hunting for your transition.

If you are serious about making movies on a Mac, I highly recommend you get Final Cut Express. It has many features of the expensive Final Cut Studio at a fraction of the cost. However, there is a rather steep learning curve.

Hello Eric,

Thanks for the response. I had previously tried step 1 of your email with limited success. I was able t o delete one transition only. After deleting the first one, the program would continue to operate. Upon deleting the second transition, the program would crash.

The link that you provide ended up being unavailable. Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate any other downloads of QT6. I will continue trying.

Your third suggestion, I was not able find the file as described.

Finally, the "not alone" link that was posted, I have previously viewed which again, unfortunately, did not come up with a definitive answer.

I switched to Mac after 20 yrs of PC to avoid instability problems. I am now afraid to spend money on more expensive Mac programs if they are going to act like a Microsoft product. If you should be able to find a definitive solution, I would be in your debt. At this spoint my frustration level is peaking with this program. Thanks for your assistance, I do appreciate it.

Doug

Sorry about that link, this one will work for sure:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...603formac.html

This kind of instability is not normal with Apple products, but understand that you are using an outdated (by apple standards) version of iMovie in a system that has been upgraded and changed multiple times.

That being said, I used to use iMovie a lot for creating large pieces. As nice as iMovie is, it just isn't meant for some tasks. Even with a "healthy" iMovie, it would occasionally crash, resulting in losses of time/product. I recently upgraded to Final Cut Express 3.5, and it has been wonderful. I have not had one issue, and I recently created a half-hour segment from about 4 hours of source material. I have had experience with FCP, however, so the transition was easy for me.

Final Cut is a completely different product than iMovie. It is used in production by many filmmaking studios, and is an industry standard.

Hello Eric,

Once again thank you for your support. I attempted the above link for QT6, the above link did not support OSX. I will do some searching today to try and download a different version of QT to see if that helps. I wish that I had my OSX disks with me so that I could reload iMovie HD6.0.3 to see if that would fix the problem. I am working in S.E Asia at the moment and have no idea if I will be able to find a copy of Final Cut Express in my area. FCE is probably the way that I will have to go. Do you have any other experience with other brands of editing software that are compatible with the Mac?

Sorry, you actually want 7.0.4. The only reason I am suggesting you downgrade is because iMovie is using Quicktime "under the hood" to accomplish it's tasks, and you mentioned you recently updated.

I haven't had any hands-on experience with other editing software, but I have heard of some. The person that was showing me said he would prefer to use FC, however, but it didn't work for him because of an odd workflow requirement. I don't remember the name off the top of my head, but you should be able to find it with a google search.

Hi Eric,

FYI, I have the program running somewhat better (still evaluating after another crash). I did not download the QT program as I was once again unable - this due to server problems. I did however, run almost every maintenance script possible using LCC including a defrag etc. Additionally, I reinstalled the last update to iMovie HD 6.0.03. After each change that I made the program would still quit until creating another new movie and saving as a QT file. I then experimented with an old movie that was crashing and it crashed the first time but not on the 2nd. 3rd. and 4 th attempts at deleting transitions. I'll continue to experiment and keep you posted should I figure out what was really happening and if it is really fixed.

Cheers

Doug
