Peter,

My name is Tom and I shall be assisting you.

All your movie footage will be stored in the imovie project file you have created. If you highlight this file and select "get info" from the file menu in the finder you will notice just how big it is! Also you can control click the file and select "show package contents". This will open the file as if it was folder (it is a folder really) and you'll see a folder in there containing your clips. iMovie organises its files this way to keep things simple for people.

So to answer your question... to delete your 4GB of footage simply drag the imovie project file to the trash and empty trash.

Just as point of note. you can delete footage from within iMovie. Notice there is a trash can in the bottom right corner of the iMovie window (I missed this for ages!). It behaves just like the finder's trash. Drag footage to this trash can and it will remain on your hard drive (if you need to retrieve it later) until you select "empty trash" from iMovie's file menu.

Feel free to get back to me if you need further help.

Regards

Tom

Thanks Tom. I find Apple very frustrating compared to Windows. I have bought the 'Missing Manual' for IMovies HD, and there is no mention of how to delete a project. Thats what I find so frustrating, the on board help doesnt even have a searchable index- if it does then it is well hidden!

I have now deleted my project, so thanks

Peter,

More frustrating than windows!!!! Careful mate - your on Mac territory here. Seriously though - I guess there is a little learning curve for the switch from windows to mac. Be aware they are very different systems and the approach to problems will be very different. One example I have noticed many PC switchers do is to constantly re-install the system or applications at the first sign of trouble. This might be best for windows but it is typically not the way to go for mac.

On board help does have a searchable index - its the rounded corner shaped oblong at the top right of the window with a magnifying glass icon.

I must admit that iMovie can be a little less intuitive at times but if you consider just what it is doing its understandable. I suspect like me, you were initially looking for some "captured media folder" like one would have with more sophisticated software. Apple clearly thought this was too complicated to manage for the "ordinary, non media savvy, guy" and lumped it together with the project file. For a full featured application you need Finalcut pro and apple have tried to identify what would make the app simple enough for everyone to use. But I guess these design decisions don't work for everyone.

For further tips and assistance there is also Apple's iMovie forum - see it here under iLife...

there's also a lot of stuff on the web in general. Google does a fine job in finding it!

And of course there is macosx.com :-)

happy editing
