I just finished making a small movie in imovie, then tried burning the movie in idvd, and it asks me to insert a recordable dvd-r, which i do, but for some reason it doesnt recognize the dvd, and spits it back out, and keeps asking me to insert a recrodable dvd. I know this is the right kind of dvd, I even brought the movie into toast, and burnt that. Do yo uhave any idea why I can't just burn the movie from idvd? or why its not recognizing the dvd?

First of all, make sure it's a DVD-R. There are DVD +R's and all other kind of formats for DVD"s. and your mac will only write to one format or the other. Other than that, it could be an issue with iDVD. I think that there were issues with some versions of iDVD burning to certain formats.. what version of iDVD do you have, and what kind of superdrive do you have (generic apple / other ?)

i have been using DVD+R's. I try a DVD-R, later and hope thatll work. the iDVD i am using is 4.01, and my superdrive is the pioneer dvd-RW DVR-117D (G5 1.8 ghz, 768 mhz, dual Powermac 7.3). that help any?

iDVD 4 only supports the DVD-R format, according to this Apple help file:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93890
If you have a Powermac G5 (you did say that you are using a Powermac G5, right?), you should be able to run iDVD 6 or iDVD 5 without a problem, which supports DVD+R burning. However, if you burn your projects with DVD-R disks, iDVD 4 will have no problem.

For some reason the iLife that came with my G5 is more current than what is actually on my comp. For instance, I had iDVD4 on my comp, but the cd/dvd package that was included in the software was iDVD 5. Do you know why this is?
anyway, iDVD will take the DVD+R now, but it gets stuck when it starts encoding. (actually i'm not sure if it gets stuck), which leads me to my next question, How long does it take to actually encode and burn the DVD? It was encoding for about 45 minutes till I finally force quit. Any suggestions? is this normal? Thanks

Apple probably made your computer before iLife 05 was released, so they stuck the iLife 05 disks in the box once it was released.
iDVD will encode in the background before you actually burn the disk, so if it crashes when you try to burn let iDVD sit for a while before burning, and it will pre-encode the assets, making it less likely to crash. Rendering will take a while, perhaps several hours. I would recommend trying to burn overnight. If it is still working in the morning, something is wrong, or something crashed..

i tried burning overnight last night, it was stuck on the encoding when i left it. When i woke up it was still doing the encoding, and the burn icon was still revolving. Any suggestions?

Well, at least it hasn't crashed. I have iDVD 6, but if I recall correctly, iDVD 5 renders in the background, it has a status on that in one of the menus. You might want to let it do that, otherwise I'll open your question to the other techs again..

I let it do the background encoding, and it finishes, but on the main "create iDVD" menu, that says "creating dvd" it just gets stuck and says "encoding ..." and doesn't do anything. The burn icon is still rotating, but nothing happens? any suggestions?

Thats strange, because it hasn't crashed, but it isn't doing anything..
Either the rendering is taking especially long, or something else weird.
Did you try crating a different project and rendering that? Your encoded assets might be bad. I'll open this question up to the other tech to see if they know what going on.
