I used imovie this mornign and everything was working just fine. Later in the day, though, it will not open. When I tell it to open, there is that transparent application image growing, then nothing. Another tech volunteer tried something where I was to trash the file in the preferences pane called com.apple.imovie.plist but that did nothing. Anything else I might try? I really need this program running again, so if there is anything I can do to make it come together...... I would appreciate it.

What version of iMovie do you have installed?
Have you tried simply restarting your Mac?
Did you try repairing disk permissions?

Did you try creating a new user just for this purpose, then log out and log back in as that user, and try iMovie?
If that works, then you probably have a corrupted .plist in your user folder.

I have whatever version came with Panther. I updated to Tiger, but did not purchase iLife. So whatever version that is is the one I have. I did try restarting, I haved verified and fixed all permissions and the 'other user' did not work. It is still not functioning correctly. Thanks for the input so far, but maybe I need pro help.

Thanks again,

I appreciate your position, but I am one of those 'pro help' people as an Apple-certified tech.
Why did iMovie suddenly just stop working? Lots of guesses, and just as many possible fixes, some may work better than others. Have you installed ANY other software at the time this started happening? Any other events that you may have noticed. Have you opened your system log in the Console app, and watch that when you try to open iMovie. The log can give you a clue about what is happening.

One of the utilities than can clean up your cache folders may be helpful.
One of these is YASU, which can be downloaded from versiontracker.com.
Also, MacJanitor has been updated for Tiger, and can also be found at versiontracker.com These, or other OS X maintenance utilities can help with your type of problem.
You may find a fix by downloading and installing the 10.4.1 updater (even if you updated to 10.4.1 through software update)
You can reinstall iMovie from the Panther install CD, using Pacifist (athough Pacifist has not yet been updated for Tiger, but it may work for you anyway)
Tiger might not be too compatible with version (3?) of iMovie, or simply upgrading to iLife may be needed now.
If all else fails, an archive and install might be worthwhile...

Thank you. Now that was 'pro help'. I hope something from the above list will work for me. And, if you do not mind, can I keep you on file to come back to later if I have a problem again (which will probably happen, knowing me)?

Thank again for the imput!

thanks for your response, and I hope the info I provided will help you.

when you post here, you get whoever responds first. Others here are at least as capable, and none get paid for this, it's total volunteer.

good luck in the future.
