I have the latest version of iMovie installed version 7.0.1 and have been working on a project with v7.0 Now iMovie will not launch. I get the spinning beach ball
and my cpu meter shows 100% usage, but nothing happens. I tried all the
" USUAL FIXES " but I cannot get it to work, no matter what I do?
Any Suggestions besides going crazy ?

Greg,

You are not alone with this problem. There are a couple things you can do and see if it corrects the issue.

1. Trash the com.apple.imovie.plist file from Home>Library>Preferences
2. create a new folder on your desktop and then go to Hard Drive>Library>Quicktime. Move all third party files to the new folder. This may include DivX 6 Decoder.component (v 6.05)

If you're not sure which plugin just remove all the plugins except "AppleIntermediateCodec.component" and "AppleMPEG2Codec.component" .

Restart the computer. Give iMovie a try.

If you feel you need those plugins place one by one back to the quicktime plugin-folder (you have to restart after every change). The DivX Decorder v6.05 is a known cause for the problem, so do not put that back in the Quicktime folder. DivX 6 (v 6.7) works fine as well as Flip4mac (v 2.1.2.72).

If you continue to have problems, the next course of action is to trash all of iMovie '08 and reinstall. If you need to do this it is recommended not to install the 7.01 update.

To reinstall:
Home / Library / Preferences / com.apple.iMovie7.plist
Hard Drive/ Library / Receipts / iMovie_701.pkg
Hard Drive/ Library / Receipts / iMovie.pkg
Delete the / Applications / iMovie.app
Insert the iLife 08 DVD
Look for this Install window "Easy Install on "your drive"
Click Customize
Uncheck everything except iMovie
Click Upgrade/Install

Keep me posted on how you do.

Dear Cheryl

I tried what you suggested, but alas I wound up having to reinstall iMovie from my disc and Believe Me I am NOT going to install the UPGRADE !!
I think they should rename it A DOWNGRADE !!!!
Things are now working properly so I thank you for all your help.
Doesn't Apple test these things before Issuing faulty software upgrades ??
Well at least I'm back to running it again.
Bless You For all you Do

Greg,

Apple does test their updates, but it is impossible to have every configuration possible on a consumer's machine. Glad you are running smoothly.
