Every time I try to log in to MSN Messenger, I get a little window saying there is a newer version I must download in order to continue using this program....would I like to do that now? Of course, I say YES and a download window comes up showing the download is taking place for the new version of MSN Messenger for Macintosh. Once the download is complete, it takes me to the sign in window and when I click on 'Sign in", it takes me to the same window saying there is a newer version I must download in order to continue using this program. I have done this about 10 times and keep getting the same loop and getting no where. I am using a Mac OS X 10.4.8. Can you please help?
Thank so much,
Linda

Hi Linda,
I helped another client solve a similar problem a while back. Please read through the following link & see if it helps you:

If it won't display let me know & I can copy and paste the ticket history directly.

Hello Richard,
Thank you for your reply. I did follow the instructions that were given for the other client yet this did not resolve the situation. I think partly because I don't have any problem with my email address like she did. After signing it, it does seem to bring up a box the says:
"The file "messenger.bin" does not appear to be compressed or encoded. It is advised that you obtain further information about the contents of this file from the sender of provider of the file." (It will help to know what program created the file and what operating system(s) the file can be used on.)
When I click on the icon then to open MSN Messenger, a box opens and reads:
"Although you have closed the MSN Messenger window, the application will continue to run so that you can receive notifications and instant messages when you are signed in." (You can choose 'Contact List' from the View menu to open the window again."
When I open the Contact List from the View menu, it brings me to the box that reads, 'Click here to sign in' and I have to go through the whole process again, telling me that there is a new version that must be downloaded in order to continue. This has got me on a loop that doesn't seem to change and it doesn't appear that I ever really am signed in. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Linda

Hi Linda,
I'm sorry my first suggestion didn't work it was a long shot but worth trying. It sounds like the file is corrupt, it should be a DMG file not BIN. If you were trying the auto update through MSN itself try the following instead:
1) Logout out of MSN and close it.
2) Go to the Microsoft site and manually download the latest version. Here's a direct link:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/default...d=msnmessenger
3) If all goes well it should download a DMG file which should open just by double clicking. Then drag the MSN icon over to your Applications folder and replace the existing one.
Failing that as long as the file downloads as a DMG I'd try a clean install of MSN. Using the same steps as the original link I posted then going through step 3 again:
a) Click on the finder in the dock, then press the command + F key combination (OR goto: File - Find). A search window should appear, the first box should read 'Search in Everywhere'. The second line should read 'Name contains'.
b) Type in the blank box: MSN Messenger, then press the search button. Another window should come up with a few files related to MSN (roughly 3 files).
c) From the Edit menu choose 'Select All' or press command+A. Once the files and highlighted drag them to the trash or press 'command+delete'. Then empty the trash.
If it's still coming up as a BIN file it could be something system related. In that case I can upload the MSN update I have to my web server for you to try. Since I know that one works fine.
Please let me know how things go.
Rick
