DOES SPOTLIGHT REPLACE INDEXING IN OS10.3.9 COMPLETELY? USED TO BE ABLE TO INDEX MY HARD DRIVES ETC. IN 10.3.9 AND NOW WITH 10.4.6 DON'T SEEM TO BE ABLE TO INDEX.

Are you talking about indexing in Sherlock? Please elaborate. Spotlight indexes files and metadata.

BEN---I USED TO HIGHLITE A HARD DRIVE ETC. GO TO GET INFO AND BE ABLE TO INDEX THE HARDDRIVE ETC. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT IS SHERLOCK OR NOT? I DON'T BELIEVE IT IS. APPRECIAZTE YOUR HELP==DICKSTER

Right. That was for the Find By Content section of Finder's Find window, which at one time (OS 9, I think) was integrated in Sherlock. So, yes, Spotlight's indexing process is now automated and cannot be recreated in an Info window. To reindex a volume or other item, I think the easiest way is to add it to the Privacy section of Spotlight Preferences and then remove it. There might also be a freeware utility to do it. You can search VersionTracker and maybe find something.
