I have been having a variety of problems with my Power Mac G4. They seemed to have occurred after I installed a print driver, that, to the best of my knowledge I have uninstalled. However, problems persist. I wanted to do an Archive and Install of my system software however, my disc is 10.3 and the system has been upgraded to 10.3.9 so it would not allow me to go further with installation. I downloaded Version 10.3.9 but when I open the installer, the window just hangs without loading any information with the Spinning Ball Of Death until I force quit. I tried using the 10.3 installation disk again and this time nothing at all would load and got the SBOD until I had to shut down from the hard drive. The same thing happens with I try to run disk utility, try to edit printer settings or select a printer nothing loads just SBOD. I have run fsck several times and it tells me the hard drive seems fine. I also tried running Disk Warrior and it also hung up on Collecting Directory Data. I think that at this point I am just making things worse. Can you help...please keep in mind that I am relatively novice at this and trying my best.
THANKS!

Are you starting up with your original install disk (or the CD that comes with Diskwarrior)? I'm just wondering because you said you had "shut down from the hard drive." You have to boot off the CD or an external drive (for Diskwarrior, or use DW's CD) for you to reinstall the system. I guess I'm not certain how you went about reinstalling 10.3.

Thank you for your quick response.
When I ran Disk Warrior, I booted from the Disk Warrior CD. When I tried to reinstall my software, I used the System Installer Disk for 10.3 but did not boot from this disk. (I followed the installation and setup directions that came with the disk and it did not say to start up from the installer CD.) When I got to the screen where I had to select the drive, which I did, I got the message that a newer OS was installed and I could not proceed. I did download a copy of the 10.3.9 upgrade but when I open it, nothing loads in the installer window and it just hangs. I went back and tried using the original installer disk (I did not boot off the CD) and the same thing happened, nothing loaded and I had to restart. That's as far as I have gotten. All my applications work just fine. I can create pdf files and burn to CD. Can't print or run Disk Utility or access Mac Help (no information loads into screen.) I do not have original copies of the software as my previous employer let us keep our computers rather them ship them back across the country when they closed our office and laid us all off. I was afraid that if I did boot directly from the CD that I would not be able to archive and install, is that not the case? Thank you again.

You have to boot off the installer CD (or DVD) to reinstall the system. You can use the archive/install option even if you have a later version of the system already in placed. In other words, you have more than the "erase and install" option available.
HTH.

Thank you for your response.
About 20 minutes ago, I opened Font Book to install some new fonts. I decided to try to access Mac Help which previously had not been working and, remarkably, all the information loaded. Feeling lucky, I opened the print utility and was able to access a printer I had previously installed and am at this moment printing out a document. I have no idea at all why everything that was not responding this morning and for the past week is now working. I did not attempt any diagnostics today at all. Anyway, I will file your response in case I need assistance in the future.
