I've got a Japanese cell phone that's set to English, and I took a picture I want on my Mac. I noticed that both of them have infrared ports and that the cell phone has a program for sending files via infrared transmission, so my question is:

Is there a program available for Mac that allows it to receive files transmitted via infrared?

Douglas,

Yes, and it is already installed on your book. With IrDA (Infrared Data Association) protocol, you can establish a wireless TCP/IP or AppleTalk connection to a network using an IrDA network access device

To set up an IrDA connection:

Open System Preferences and click Network.
Choose IrDA Modem Port from the Show pop-up menu.

To establish an IrDA connection, position your computer within three feet of the other computer or infrared network access device. IrDA devices that are in range will appear in the Infrared status menu in the menu bar.

You can also use the Help menu on the MacBook to give you further information. Hopefully, your phone is a digital one that can talk to the book.

Under the Show pop-up menu IrDA isn't shown. Is there any way I can download software that will use my MacBook Pro's infrared port to receive files?

Douglas,

I thought it was odd that you did not have IrDA in the Network, so I did a bit of research and found that the IrDA port you have is for the Apple Remote only.

MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and recent iMacs come with an Apple Remote that allows you to remotely control certain features in your applications such as iTunes and DVD Player.

So, you will not be able to use the IrDA. But, you possibly could use BlueTooth. Just open System Preferences, click Bluetooth, and click Turn Bluetooth, then try pairing the phone with the book. Of course, the phone has to have bluetooth turned on so that the two can 'talk' to each other. This is assuming that the phone has bluetooth.
