I would like to install a larger internal hard drive.
I have a Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics), CPU type Power PC G4 (2.9) with a CPU speed of 400 MHz. It still has the original Quantum FireballLM10.2 with a 9.57 capacity. I am near filling the drive.
I am using OS 10.3.9; I use OS9 applications frequently.
I have purchased an Hitachi 80 GB Parallel ATA Interface 7200 RPM drive. The Comp USA Apple rep said that it would work.
Articles in MacWorld and a David Pogue book suggest that I can use the disk utility feature to create a clone of the existing drive by using the restore feature. (I also use Retrospect Express to back up the entire drive)
There was some talk about a master versus slave drive.
My preference is not to use the 80 GB as an extra drive, but simply use one drive, if possible.
Am I able to install the 80 GB, use the restore feature, and then use the 80 GB? I suppose I would need to remove or somehow deactivate the Quantum.
Thank you very much.

Leonard,
Download: Carbon Copy Cloner
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
Have the large drive in the machine slave just formatted and ready to go. Launch CCC and select your primary hard disk and set the 80GB to the target. Click preferences and set the following options:
Repair permissions before cloning
Delete directories before overwriting
Make bootable
Click okay and click the lock icon to type your admin password.
Click clone (eat a sandwich) 10GB ~ 30-45 minutes.
Come back shut the machine down and put the slave 80GB as the master (make sure to change the jumper as marked) make the other old drive slave and change the jumper.
Boot and enjoy your new space.

Ryan,
Thank you very much for the reply.
The new Hitachi drive has directions on hooking it up as master or slave.
On the currently installed Quantum Fireball LM 10.2, how will I change it from the master to slave? Will it be visible to a nontechnical person? Will I need to seek a Quantum diagram somewhere?
I hope to try to make the switch this coming weekend on Saturday or Sunday.
Thank you again.

Typically there will be a diagram on the top label of the machine. The switches will look like this (I'll take you a picture and e-mail it to you if necessary).

where the "jumpers" connect two of the pins...
A lot of the time it's master closer to the ata connector and the slave and cable select (master or slave are determined by where they are on the cable) is sometimes no jump on there at all.
I'll see if I can look up that drive and tell you exactly where to put the jumper.

Dear Ryan,
Thank you for your e-mail advice on installing the larger hard drive. I apologize for the length of this e-mail.
I followed the recommendations in your e-mail and ran Carbon Copy Cloner. Afterwards, I changed the Hitachi to the master and disconnected the original Quantum. I simply do not need the extra space.
During the format and cloning I had named the Hitachi Macintosh HD II. After disconnecting the original, I renamed the Hitachi Macintosh HD.
I also installed Window Shade after completing the change.
Everything seemed to be more or less fine. On opening some applications I received a message that it was opening the application for the first time. The alias on the left side of the window and in the dock did not seem to respond. I expect my Retrospect Express sets will not work, but I have not tried yet.
I have had a few problems with Word 98 and Excel.
I was unable to Save As in Word 98 or Excel 98. The documents will save, but not Save As. I also noticed that in the File menu, the following items were dimmed: "New Folder, Duplicate, Make Alias" (Show Original as well, but I do not know when it shows anyway).
I am also finding that several Word documents are coming up as Read Only. I am receiving the message "Word cannot save or create this file. The disk may be full or write-protected. Try one or more of the following: *Free more memory. * Make sure that the disk you want to save the file on is not full, write-protected, or damaged."
Sometimes I could not change the name of a document or folder.
Another item is that the envelope function in Word 98 does not open the address book.
My first workaround was to drag files or folders to a floppy, make the changes, and drag back. Later I discovered that by changing the permissions I am able to save changes, save as, and make new folders.
On the ownership and permissions for the Word files, sometimes the Get Info will show the user of the other G4 as the owner and sometimes "system." Occasionally when I change the names and try to lock the permissions, it reverts back to the other name. If I close the Get Info box, then reopen it, it appears with my name and I am then able to lock it.
I am connected by Ethernet with one other G4 running 9.2.2. I had been running across the Read-only issue a few times when exchanging files with the other G4. We had remained connected a few days, but yesterday it disconnected. I expect that is something else.
I have tried using the disk utility to verify and repair permissions and rebuild the Classic desktop.
I use TypeIt4Me. When I attempt to use it I receive the message, "I seem to have lost the location of the file TypeIt4MeData (error-43) Please find and re-open it or give me a new file to work with."
I would locate the data file, but it does not open. I had installed TI4M when using OS9; it was still working after I switched to 10.3.9.
I hope I do not have to spend forever changing permissions.
Window Shade is working.
Any help available is appreciated. If you let me know a mailing address, I will send a user fee or whatever you want call it. I sent a fee to Carbon Copy Cloner site.
Thank you.
