Hello,

I'm a MacOSX newbie; but with good ability in Unix & Linux. I have a Mac server with OS 10.4.3 installed.

I'm in the process of installing a 2.2 xcode dmg. My experience with installing any .dmg is nill; but I have a manual with basic package/image install instruction, but nothing really concrete instruction-wise.

What is the proper way to install a larger .dmg (like xcode) which contains multiple packages so that all users accessing the machine can use it?

Thanks,
Rich

You're not installing a dmg; that's the type of disk image that contains the installer. Once you've downloaded all of the dmg parts, click on the first one (the one with no part designation) and it will mount with all the parts combined. If you want to hold onto the image without separate parts, you can burn the mounted image to a CD or convert the mounted image to a single-file dmg.

As for installation, once the image is mounted, you install it as you install any other application that uses a package and Installer.app. Xcode installs in the Developer folder in the root of your hard disk where all users can access it, unless you don't give them permission as non-admin users.

Thank you, Ben... I played around and found that, as I expected, the Mac senses the dmg and with the correct clicks I can download the packages required. I use VNC access so it worked well via the GUI.

Initially, I thought that the Java and C++ would have an icon access but that doesn't seem to be the case; but I was able to run the Java and C++ (tests) from command line which I believe is what users will be doing (assumably, ssh or telnet in, and then do development).

I guess the Developer Folder is the default area for these tools/applications and are set in everyones' path by default. Other applications that are accessible from the GUI are located in /Applications. Is that true?

Thanks again,
Rich
