Hello,

I am trying to install Mac OS X 10.3.9 on a 400MHZ G4 running 10.2.8 with 640mb RAM. and 12gigs free hard disk space. The installer recognized the disk as installable it goes through the first 3 phases of installation but stalls on the type of installation (3rd or fourth sequence heading under installation progress). The screen goes blue and the bars revolving in a small circle cycle indefinitely. I have tried this several times and each time it has stalled in this cycle for more than 20 minutes.

What can I do to get beyond this glitch? I ran disk utility to examine and repair anything before attempting this.

Where did you find the installer for 10.3.9? If you downloaded that 10.3.9, then that can't work to upgrade 10.2.8

There is no installer that goes directly to 10.3.9. 10.3.9 is always an update.

The system install for 10.3 will be either 10.3, or 10.3.5 - then update either one to 10.3.9 with the combined updater. The combined installer for 10.3.9 will not work until you have installed 10.3.x

Hello,

I have had a heck of a time getting back to answer your reply. The link in the email is incorrect.

The following error is returned when executed,

"Server not found
Firefox can't find the server at account."

I typo ed when I entered the initial query, the install version I have is 10.3.7, not 10.3.9 on install disks. I had an external disk that was partitioned and on one of the partitions I was able to do a clean install of 10.3.7. That drive at a later date crashed. I kept 10.2.8 on the internal hard drive because I needed to toggle between some old programs on OS X 9. Subsequently, the internal hard drive had developed problems. I ran disk utility to attempt repairs. I am no trying to install 10.3.7 on the internal hard drive and the new external hard drive. The installer recognizes both disks as installable, but when attempting to install, both get stuck in limbo about the 3rd or 4th sequence of installation. Can you go from 10.2.8 to 10.3.7 or do you need intermediate upgrades? Since the clean install worked on a newly partitioned hard drive, do I need to erase the system off the disk to install? If so, how can I erase it when I can only get it to boot either in 10.2.8 on the internal hard disk (active system), or from the installer CD which appears to allow me only installer related options?

Thanks

You haven't said where you got that 10.3.7 installer - I would guess it came from a G5. If the disk is grey, then the computer model will be listed on the label. The commercial installer, which is the one you need, is _always_ on a black disk for any version since 10.2 !
To answer your question about upgrading directly from 10.2.8 to 10.3.7? I think not... You must upgrade to 10.3 first. The disk would be black, and not grey, and would be either 10.3, or 10.3.5 (which would work also, BTW)
Once you have 10.3.x installed, you can then update to 10.3.9 with the combined installer. That update _cannot_ work with anything older than 10.3, but _will_ work with any version 10.3 to 10.3.x . Here's the link, if you are able to get 10.3 installed. http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...pdate1039.html
You don't have a system that came with 10.3.7 originally, so that installer on a grey disk is unlikely to work at all.
To recap - your 10.3.7 on a grey disk, isn't installing, because you are not installing to the Mac that is listed on the label of that disk. You need the commercial installer, which is on a black disk, to upgrade to Panther. Then you can upgrade to 10.3.9 (with the combined installer) if you want to do that.
Let me know how it goes...

You are correct in that it is a grey disk, which I had purchased on e-bay because I could not find one from Apple's site. Why was it able to be installed on the original external disk? Not model specific for install on external disk?

Thanks

I will try and locate 10.3 on a black disk somewhere.
