Hi,
My level of skill with mac is not 'beginners', but i do have a hard time getting my head around how the system works.
Now i am bying and installing a new hard disk with 250 GB of space,to replace an old one that was Slave. I tried installing a new hard disk yesterday, but it was a dodgy buy and showed 128 GB though they had told me in the shop it had 300.
Anyway what i want to know is after i have physically installed the disk (i know how to do that) what are the next steps?
I went to disk utilities to tried to verify disk permissions but it wouldnt let me select that drive (although it could detect it)The hard disk icon did not appear on the desktop either, but i believe i have to verify it first somehow?

Ideally, I would like to use the new 250 GB disk as startup disk, but have lost the OS9 CDs. Is there a way to change startup disk without the actual CD's?
I am very greatful in advance for your help,
best regards, Julia

Depending on the model Mac you have, (you didn't say), it may only recognize drives of 128GB or less. Older Macs don't have large drive support. You have to add an ATA/IDE PCI Controller card to get the large drive support.

Then you need to use Disk Utility to format the drive (as Extended) in order to see the drive on your desktop.

Once a drive is formatted, then you have to install the operating system in order to use it as the startup disk.

Hi Bob, thanks for your reply.
I have a Power Mac G4 Desktop, forgot to mention that! i wasnt aware that some models needed that extra controller card in order to read the disk.
Does that mean that i need to buy that before i can even use it, or format it as my startup disk?
Thanks again, julia

Yes, you need to get the card before you can use the drive.

There are a number of different G4 models. Any older than the G4 Quicksilver 2002 do not support drives larger than 128GB.

You would need to install an ATA/IDE PCI Controller Card like this one;

Then you would use Disk Utility to format the drive, then install the Operating System on it.
