TICKET ARCHIVE -> Installing Adobe Photoshop 3.0 On a G4

I have Adobe Photoshop 3.0.5 deluxe on a CD-Rom. Yes , I know it is quite ancient. But it is all I need right now. It was installed on a Power Mac 7200, but the G4 says I need OS 9.1 or higher to run it, but of couse the G4 is higher, OS 10.3.5. The error message says "no classic system folder" and that it will run with Classic Application, which isn't on here or apparently available. So how can I run this without upgrading, or can I even upgrade this dinosaur? No help online so far. Thanks for your consideration.

James,

you will need a Classic environment on your computer to run Photoshop 3.0.5. If you have a MacOS 9.1 or higher you can install it. Check your manuals to see how. Go to the Adobe site to see if they offer upgrades.

Somewhat. In my question I mentioned that I need a Classic environment and that I have higher than 9.1. The manual has no information regarding installing a Classic environment, whatever that is. Is Classic a software program that I need to purchase? I will look for it again, but have had no luck so far. Adobe apparently can only upgrade from 5.0. That's as far back as their downloads go, but they don't specify if it is possible to upgrade from 3.0 to 5.0.
Thank you for your reply,
James

What I meant by Classic environment is: you will need to install MacOS 9.1 or higher (up to 9.2.2) preferably on a separate partition. Then you will have to install Photoshop (after having booted into MacOS 9). After this you can either use Photoshop while running MacOS 9 or in the Classic environment of of MacOS X.

Hi Allan.

Thank you for the prompt response.

Do you have suggestion as to how I can get Mac OS 9.1 or 9.2.2?

My old system software from my Power Mac 7200 is only 7.5 and with updates, 7.5.3. On the Mac downloads that I have been able to find, 9.1 can only be downloaded as an update to 9.0. How do I get a disc with System 9.0?
Apparently 9.0 cannot be downloaded. Do you think this means I have to purchase 9.0 in order to run Photoshop 3.0? and if so, where do I get it? Ebay perhaps. It seems unfair that I have to buy it when I just paid big bucks for this G4 with OS X. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

thanks,
James

Hi again. While I was looking into getting 9.0 on the Mac main website I realized that I need a lot of updates. But when I try to download them my server connection times out long before the larger updates are completely downloaded. Is this something I need to email Earthlink about, or is there something I can reconfigure myself that will stop the timing out? thanks again,

James

James,

which G4 do you have? My G4 came with CDs containing MacOS X and MacOS 9.2. But that was in 2001 of course.
I would talk to the store (or person) where you purchased your machine. They should be able to help you getting hold of MacOS 9.x. I'm sure you can buy it at eBay. Try here: http://cgi.ebay.com/Macintosh-OS-9-1...QQcmdZViewItem
You should, however, consider how often you need MacOS 9.x. It might be better to forget about Classic MacOS and get Photoshop 7 from eBay or somewhere. Photoshop 7 and onwards runs in MacOS X.

Thanks Allan!

As you suggested, OS 9 did indeed come on a disk with this Powerbook G4. I am now running Photoshop in the Classic environment of OSX. Thanks so much for your help. It would have saved a lot of time and aggravation if this procedure were covered in the manuals that came with the G4, but I see nothing. I am now going to try to transfer my old Quark Xpress software via the old net work connection method mac's used to have, through the phone line connection. Hopefully I can just drag the Quark folder over to the G4 and it will work? What do you think?

thanks again,

Yes, I did see your other question.
You might want to check your PPPoE options. I assume you connect to the internet through your ethernet and not via modem.
The way to check PPPoE options is by opening System Preferences and selecting the Network preference panel. Once selected click the padlock to authenticate. Now choose the PPPoE menu and click the PPPoE Options... button. See if everything looks right. Especially look to be sure that the "Prompt every xy minutes to maintain connection" checkbox is unchecked. I don't have anything checked at all. Make your choices, click OK and close your System Preferences.

Yes, that was it. thanks. I do use a dial up connection for now, but the PPP preferences were set to disconnect internet connection after 16 minutes and to annoyingly prompt me every 15 minutes. So I unchecked them. Really, thanks a ton. what a pain that was. and so easy to fix. if i only knew.

Still having a problem connecting this Powerbook G4 to my old Powermac 7200. The Apple store said I could use a Ethernet cable. I hooked it up and followed the Mac Help instructions, but the 7200 is not recognized. Apple store says it is because System 7.5.5 is not compatible with file sharing, but I have used it to share before. Tried to find IP/TCP address of 7200 to no avail. I will be taking it in to the genious desk I suppose, unless you have any suggestions. Really appreciate all your help. I am starting a coffee company and would love to send you some of my first roast Honduran Marcala. It's all roasted, bagged and sealed at a licensed roaster in CT. All I need is your ship to address. I will also have a Guatamalan Huehuetenango soon as well. Let me know if you would like some!

Thanks again,
James

James,

isn't it supposed to be the other way around? You can connect a Powerbook to a desktop Mac via ethernet and use your Powerbooks hard drive as an externally connected hard drive to the 7200. Meaning: the powerbooks hard drive should show up on the desktop of the PowerMac 7200. Don't know about the difference in technology though. The two machines are almost 10 years apart.

hi Allan.
Yes, I've tried both. Went to apple store but their monitor wouldn't work with the Powermac!! So the genius gave me written instructions on Ethernet connection, but still nothing. Gave each machine it's own IP address to bypass appletalk and still nothing. I'm going to try what you suggested now before going back to the genius: try to recognize the G4 as an external hard drive. I would think the procedure is the same, but perhaps drive set up will recognize the G4. I'll let you know. My coffee business will have a web presense soon but I havn't worked out international business yet. Of course shipping charges would be exhorbitant. But my coffees are specialty coffees, Certified Organic, Fair Trade, Shade Grown, Bird Friendly. They do command a premium price, so I will have international shipping options. Send me an address if you like, and when I am up and running I'll send you a complimentary bag of coffee!

Hi Allan. I have made great progress with your help, and now have succesfully linked my Ibook g4 with the Power Mac 7200 and transferred files. I have Adobe Photoshop 3.0 and QuarkXpress running in the Classic environnment on the G4. Only problem is I can't print. I've tried everything suggested in the help menu. The first thing help says is to install 9.2.1 or later, but I already have 9.2.2 installed. I am using an Epson USB printer. I opened the Control Panels folder in the OS 9 system folder and opened the USB Sharing utility, just like it says in Help. Help says to click next to the name of the printer in the dialog box, but no printer name appears and there is no help regarding getting a printer name to appear in the Sharing box. When I go to the chooser while Quark is running in Classic, the Epson printer is not available. There is Lazerwriter 8, which requires appletalk but that only works through the modem port, I supppose. I'm wondering if I can choose appleshare in the chooser and then type in an IP address for the printer? I don't know. If so, how do find the printer's IP address. This is so strange. It is just this one last problem and I'm all set. Please help!! I don't what else to tell you that I have tried. I turned on Appletalk in OSX through the sytem preferences, Ethernet, etc... but that didn't work either. Thanks!

James,

my HP DeskJet 940c works fine from the Classic environment. Do you mean your Epson printer is not available at all? Which printer do you have? Have you installed the "classic" Epson printer driver? You don't anything as complicated as Appletalk or printer sharing. It should be possible to just print using the "Print" option under the "File" menu. You do have to select your printer from the "Chooser" though.

it's the Espon Sylus CX4600

It does not appear in the Chooser window in Classic. I searched for classic printer driver, and reviewed help info regardinng drivers and can't find anything. How do I install the printer driver you are talking about so it appears in the Chooser window and more importantly, where is it located or where do i get it? Shouldn't it have come with the printer software or already be here? I'm not making any progress. Frustrating.

James,

there are some system 9 drivers for your printer here:

ftp://ftp.epson.com/drivers/epson11110.sea.hqx
ftp://ftp.epson.com/drivers/epson11523.sea.hqx

The latter is listed as an update. I don't know if this means you need to install the first one before updating. You must check this yourself. Read the information.

To install the printer driver(s): boot into MacOS 9, extract the sea.hqx archives, read the information and start the installer.

I'm sure you will manage to get the driver(s) installed.

When I boot up Quarkxpress the "find" option is not available. could you please be more specific? is the archive an extention?, utility, control panel item? Your continued patience is appreciated. OK Allan.

I am making progress!! but still can't print. I downloaded and installed the files you sent me, and now the CX4600 appears in the Chooser window. but no choice for a serial port appears, which is the problem, i now realize. I have spent a couple of hours trying to get the damn thing to work. The Epson related info appears in the print dialog box and in page set up. fine and dandy. I tried to print from Quark and photoshop and the expected windows appear: "now spooling document" and "now printing" but nothing prints. So for some reason, the serial port is not available. I have two on this machine, and tried the other one to no avail. I reinstalled the OS9 software and still no USB port appears in the Chooser's printer port window. This stuff is printing somewhere in the universe, because no error message bounces back. And the printer works fine with OSX. I thought that perhaps my messing around with Appletalk and Appleshare earlier might have screwed things up, but can't find anything askew. Also, no Print Monitor shows up or is available in Control Panels, which is not right i'm sure. so maybe it has something to do with that as well. Your continued forbearance is greatly appreciated! I am trying to design and print labels for my coffee and this is a big drag, man!!

PS. I located my Epson printer manual and have checked over the help info that was also very hard to locate, ad naseum. Will be calling their tech support tomorrow also. this is an amazingly difficult process for what should be a simple problem. I am not daft, I don't think. I have a pretty good grasp of this stuff and I am sure I will go postal on the Epson folks. You have been a great help. I have sent one feedback message about your assistance and will send another when prompted. Thank again. When my coffee is available for shipping I will drop ship some to you. I expect to have a global presense and Germany is it? would be cool! So send me an address, or Post Box and you will be put on my comp list.

Alrighty then!

There are two USB ports on the side of this Ibook G4. As I mentioned, I already print through the USB port in OSX. The problem is that in OS9, Classic environment, when I open the Chooser no port choice appears in the window for selecting a printer port. It should say"USB port 1" but nothing appears there. I'm sure it's a simple solution and I am just not explaining the problem clearly. I am calling Epson tech support now to see what they can do. Thanks for your help

James,

today I tried installing the Epson driver for MacOS 9 which I recommended to you. I have the same thing with chooser - not being able to select a port. In my case, though, I would believe it's because I don't have an Epson printer attached to my machine.

What were your results with the Epson support?

Allan,

I was just about to intall OS9 and realized I don't know what I'm doing. How do I install it so it doesn't interfere with OS10? I know I can switch start up disks in system preferences. But how do i install OS9 without it overwriting OS X in the first place? Or will it not do that? Or does it not matter? I'm a bit leary about messing with the OS. Can it be installed on a seperate partition? Maybe you made a breakthrough on the Classic printer problem and I won't have to worry about this!

I really have to get to work, and this printing problem is a huge time drain. I hope you can help.

James,

there is an article here:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.h...tnum=106294#m9

I believe ( without being 100% sure !!! ) that the directions for the third scenario apply to your situation (MacOS X already installed). Still, I can't answer your question: if OS9 will interfere with OSX, since I have always kept my OS9 and OSX on separate partitions. The following is taken from the web page above:

If you are reinstalling by using a bootable Mac OS 9 Installation CD (either retail version or one included with your computer) and you need to reinstall Mac OS 9 on the Mac OS X disk, perform a clean installation by following these steps:

1. Start up from the CD, and open the Installer.
2. Click the Options button in the Installer to access the clean installation option.
3. Select the checkbox for clean installation.
4. Install the software.

That is what i want to do, install OS9 on a separate partition. but i don't even know what that means or how to do it. If that is the safest way to have two OS's on the same hard drive, that is what i want to do. So can you walk me through it? Thanks. O

Heh Allan, thanks for that info.

I think the CD I have is bootable, because I booted up the Power Mac 7200 off it earlier. But I would still prefer to install it on a separate partition as mentioned earlier, if that will work. the possible problems that can occur with installing 9 after 10 can be avoided by installing on a separate partition? Let me know what you think is the best way to avoid conflicts, and of course still be able to use Quark and Photoshop. So I guess there is no way to easily get the USB port to appear in the Chooser in Classic, or you would have commented. thanks for all your help.

Hello James,

couldn't get back to you earlier - time zones!
This morning I talked to my Mac dealer and he said it is safe to install MacOS 9 "on top of" MacOS X. From the link I sent you yesterday that was also what I suspected. So, if you don't want to repartition and install BOTH MacOS 9 and reinstall MacOS X, I would just go ahead and install MacOS 9 from your bootable CD. I think somewhere during the process you will be asked to create a new system folder. You answer yes to this option.

Hi Allan.

More roadblocks. very discouraging!

I've tried for over an hour to figure this out with PFD install instructions off the CD and the info you sent me. Two things: first, I tried to trash the OS 9 folder for classic before doing this install and was informed that I couldn't do so because the file is needed by the computer (even though I'm in OSX). so i went ahead and tried anyway. I inserted the CD and then shut down and restarted holding down the C key, as instructed. The telltale screen that I have booted off the disc does not appear (I did see the CD screen when I booted off this disc on the PowerMac). What does appear is a small smiling face icon that alternates with a "?" while I am still holding down the C key. Eventually, the computer starts up in X. I tried everything i can read or think of, and still can't boot the Ibook off the disk. I tried choosing the Startup disc from system preferences, but the CD doesn't appear there. I tried installing the software off the opened CD (in OSx) and when I click on the installer, the computer tries to open the Classic environment. so i can't trash Classic, and can't install OS 9. What do you think?

sorry this is taking so much of your time. I do appreciate it.

James,

in one of your earlier messages you wrote: "I think the CD I have is bootable, because I booted up the Power Mac 7200 off it earlier." This may not be the case with your PowerBook G4. Which model do you have? Please go to "About This mac" beneath the apple in the upper left corner of your screen to find out.

James,

OK, your iBook cannot boot into MacOS 9! Now I'm just curious: didn't you already have MacOS 9 installed and the Classic environment functionig? At least you were running PhotoShop 3.0.5 which only runs in Classic!

What happens if you select "System Preferences" from the apple menu (under the apple - upper left part of screen) and click the "Classic" preference pane? Does it find a system folder?

Allan,

I guess I don't really understand this Classic thing. My understanding is that it is just a shell program, not a fully functioning OS. And yes I installed it off a disc that came with this computer. And yes when I click on Classic in System Preferences it shows "system folder" in the window. There is a separate system folder for OS 9 on the harddrive and it contains suitcase called System that contains OS 9.2.2 and other documents for Classic. I don't understand where you are going with this. If this computer can't boot up in OS 9 then I'm screwed, right? I mean as far as being able to print out of Photoshop and
Quark? with the Epson printer? OS 9 doesn't appear as a separate choice in the startup disc window.

This feels like a huge waste of time now. I am contacting Epson customer service tomorrow to see if they have a printer that does work with classice, though I doubt that makes any difference because It would have to use the same driver. What a circle! Shouldn't I be able to ungrade my Photoshop for free? I have the disc. Or is there still hope with our current strategy?

James,

this is really great. I found this in the macosxhints Forum:

http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...05030316173578

It describes how you can completely avoid using the Classic environment (Chooser, AppleTalk, etc) when printing.
I have created, installed and tested the script on my system and it works perfectly. Now I will never again have problems when printing from applications running under Classic!
If you have questions about the procedure describe please just write. I think this will finely do the job.

Hi Allan.

I have read through this. I think it is more than I should be doing with my limited knowledge. I've never used Script Editor or created folders for /Library/, or where Library is located. Also, if you look on to the replys, one user mentions trying it on a G5 with the Epson CX4600, the same printer I have, and the print que automatically stops. I would hate to try all this and then have it not work. Some of the seemingly simpler solutions outlined in the replies I would like to try first. Such as converting the PostScript file to PDF and printing from Acrobat or Preview. I can only save as EPS in Quark, apparently and then was able to open it with Appleworks, but not Acrobat or Preview. The resulting print job looked awful. I must be missing something. Anyway, a designer I know says the best way to submit a file for professional printing is to save it as PDF anyway. Another replyer to the fix says "maybe I'm not understanding the problem, but I would suggest using PrintToPDF... and then dropping the resulting pdf onto the OSX driver's app. " I'm not sure what the OSX drivers app is or how to put it in the dock, but am thinking it may be easier for me than the whole scripting route, that didn't even work for that one guy who tried it with my printer. so let me know what you think I should do.

Thanks,

James

Hi James.

I don't know anything about Quark. And I don't know if you are able to save documents created by Photoshop 3 as pdf files (to be opened and printed in Preview).
The OSX drivers app mentioned is the "Print Center" app found in the "Utilities" folder of your "Applications" folder. If you drag this to the Dock it will stay there and you can print documents by just dropping these on that icon in the Dock.
If you want to avoid spending more time with Classic I believe the best thing to do would be to get hold of the MacOS X applications you need - meaning Photoshop 7 at least - Quark, as I said, I don't know about.
You could also let me know exactly what it is you need to do with your computer - maybe you don't need such an expensive program as Photoshop.
You could also try opening a new question and see if someone else can help you with your printing/classic problems.

Allan,

thanks. I was just looking at Adobe website and I can upgrade to Photoshop CS2 for $149, apparently. Even that is a large sum for me right now. so I am going to try the PrinttoPDF file suggested by that replier earlier. The app in my utilities folder is called Printer Setup Utility. Is that it? And do I drag and drop an alias into the Dock, or the actual app? Will this interfere with other printing procedures?

Thanks,

Printer Setup Utility is the right one and you just drag the app onto the Dock. It will not interfere with other printing procedures - you will still be able to print direct from any application.

hi allan,
i just wanted to thank you for all your help and time and let you know the outcome. I have been able to print using PrintToPDF. Oddly enough, the Printer Setup Utility did not work. Files just sat there and did not print. However, I was able to open the PDF files in Acrobat Reader 5.O and print from there. There are significant drawbacks with PrintToPDF mainly the small number of supported fonts. But the photo reproduction is excellent and PDF files are supported by commercial lazer printers for high quality durable color label production. So you should really try some of my coffee. I will have a web presence at billyfiasco.com very soon and would be happy to send you a pound of freshly roasted coffee directly from the roaster to whereever you wish. Thanks again for all your help.
